    chalkbrood in overwintered super

Hi, I have a colony which was overwintered with a super on top. It was the lightest of my colonies all winter and eventually I fed it fondant, although in hindsight I don't think I needed to. When first inspected this year there was brood and stores in the super and nothing in the brood box. I...

Using Poly Hives during high season

Also the wooden stuff will still fit with it if necessary. It looks a bit odd but does work.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Decided to check one of my hives which was fairly light. I have poly hives and find they don't use up much of their stores over winter. I messed up with this hive slightly and ended up in the Autumn with two brood frames of foundation (I know!!). So I left them with a fairly full super to...

    Soft set honey question

The garage seems to have done the trick. It's been back in the house for a few days and is still lovely and the consistency I would have expected. The longer I do this the more I feel that I don't understand honey at all. There is oil seed rape all around us every year and in the last four...

    Soft set honey question

Thanks both. It sounds like it's just been a bit too warm to set so I'll put it in the garage and hopefully it will set nicely. It was only last year I decided to sell honey so it's been a bit of a learning curve. A bit like this whole beekeeping malarkey!

    Soft set honey question

Both the seed and the summer honey were stored in the kitchen but the one I used as a seed was set fairly solid. It was more the soft set that I wondering about whether it affected it. It wasn't too near the aga and it's not that hot in here due to outside temperatures but it doesn't get cool...

    Spacing in supers.

After 4 years I've started using 11s to start with moving to 10s once it is drawn out. It's just one of those things you start of thinking will be alright but realise eventually to listen to those who know and start with 11.

    Soft set honey question

On 9th January I tried to make some soft set honey with 2 jars of summer honey that I had left (wasn't collected). This honey had granulated but not completely set. I used the dyce method as per Stuart from the Norfolk Honey Company's video on youtube. So the seed was made from some spring...

    Moving hives 150ft ?

Yes I moved 2 hives about 40ft a few winters ago. I just chose a time when they were not going to be flying for a while due to the cold weather. I covered the entrances just to be sure and removed it a day after the move. It all went fine. Incidentally they were facing a different way...

    Uniting problem

I had a similar problem for which I was advised to seive them. It worked perfectly. Probably too late now but worth remembering for another time. https://beekeepingforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=45113

    First Queen finding success

Well done. It is a great feeling. It took me four years but you are much more likely to find her if you know you can - if you know what I mean. Saying that I have two colonies where I just can't find her and have given up for now. Will try again in the spring when there are less bess.

    Poly hives

I have poly hives and am always amazed how much honey is still there in the spring, it seems to be about the amount I thought they were left with although there is lots of ivy around us so they no doubt bulk up on that.

Supers with sugar syrup after winter early spring

Yes this is what I do. One super with partly filled frames that they clear out. Looking at my notes I nadired them on 14th September last year. At the moment the hives are absolutely rammed with bees so I'm just carrying on as normal for the moment and will do one more extraction before I put...

    Stirring soft set honey

Ok I hadn't realised a new drill would be so cheap. We're not a great DIY family and don't have much stuff. Anyway maybe I was being too fussy about the drill but surely you can't stick anything into the honey that isn't food grade!! Anyway I think I will just do a bit next year and see how...

    Stirring soft set honey

I'm planning to make some soft set honey next year and am currently making my shopping list. The food stirrers the honey companies sell need you to connect it to a drill. Considering I've thoroughly cleaned the equipment, my kitchen and everything else to try not to get anything unwanted in...
