    What are they up to???

I went to look into one of the nucs I made up a few weeks ago from a colony that was being AS'd. This one is 5 frames with a total of 2 QCs in a full size hive, the rest being made up of new foundation. The hive was almost empty, just a few dozen bees left and only the one empty QC. Then I...

    Makes sense :D

    Rehoming

Are you able to look for and find the queen? If so I'd perform a Demarree AS. The bees will draw out all the new foundation in a few weeks and gradually migrate down from the old brood box. If everything is totally stuck and impossible to get apart maybe put the new brood box directly over the...

    Moving new nuc

Thanks for the replies. There aren't any other bees at the allotment but there are some within a few miles at least. I've got no idea on the drone situation though, my other hives don't have many so I guess the queens may have more chance if I move them. If the queens haven't emerged yet, is...

    Moving new nuc

One of my double brood hives was making swarm preparations a week or so back so I performed a Demarree as usual. Last Friday I split one of the brood boxes into 3 separate nucs, each with its own sealed queen cell. I've been asked to put some bees on my allotment plot and I think a few nucs...

    Creating beeswax pellets

Another thought, how about dripping the wax very gently onto a sheet of ice? The pellets won't be round but should give you little lumps of wax I can see I'm going to have to play about with this :D

    always look on ......

That's roughly how I made mine, just mixed the cappings with a few litres of Vodka, mixed and then strained. I had ALOT of pollen and tiny bits of wax in mine so I filtered it through some coffee filters. This took a few hours in total and yes, I was tipsy by the time I finished lol. Also...

    Creating beeswax pellets

Warm the wax and squish it through a Mr Potato Head :D Putting a few drops of washing up liquid in water reduces the surface tension so may reduce the splatter effect? Don't use wax pellets to shoot cats. You'll ruin your gun:spy:

    always look on ......

Sounds like you've had a busy season, you've done very well for your second year :D I had a terrible start to the year having to move my bees to a new apiary and early weather was shocking. Then the sun arrived:sunning: Of my 5 hives, 3 produced a lovely crop totalling 200-250lbs, 1 was split...

Mixing your own oxalic acid solution?

It's very easy to mix your own. I don't know how dangerous it is though since I've never got it on me and don't plan on trying:icon_204-2: Follow the instructions and you can't go too wrong really ;)

    Is Summer over ?

Worked nights last night and in again tonight. Spent the shift cwtched up in my fleece wishing I'd brought my woolly hat:nature-smiley-12:

    Too late to remove supers

Provided they have plenty of stores in the brood box I'd remove the super and take the sealed frames for myself. Do it now before the weather gets much colder to save them from having to heat the unneeded space. You could also put the super under the BB without a queen excluder but by the...

what temp do bees stop taking 2:1 syrup

With the change in weather this week I wouldn't put any more syrup this year. How much stores are in the hive now?
  15. A

what temp do bees stop taking 2:1 syrup

They'll keep on taking syrup as long as they need it. The trouble is that as the temperature cools the bees won't be able to reduce the water content enough for them to cap it which then risks fermentation. I think:spy:

    Lizards in hives

How about a few match sticks in the corners:icon_204-2: 100% lizards and very cute they are too. Some are up on top of the crown board safe and warm but the odd few have made their way inside the hive

    Lizards in hives

They could be the organic answer we've all been looking for. I found it first so I'm watching you lot:spy: I'm gonna be rich :D now to train the bees not to sting them to death when they get in the hives and we're away:icon_204-2: :icon_204-2: I wouldn't know what it said myself but the hives...

    Lizards in hives

Lately I've been getting lots of lizards (common I think) around my hives. They are tiny and don't cause any problems but they do get in the hives and the bees make short work of them. I've found 3 dried out little bodies so far :( They are obviously being attracted to the heat but is there...

    mouse gaurd

I had mice in two of my hives last year and won't be making that mistake again. I tried to fit my mouse guards yesterday. Since it was raining I figured the bees would be indoors but was surprised to see a major flow on and the little sods were evil with it. Needless to say I legged it with my...

    Why do you keep Bees?

Purely money orientated for me, I don't like having too much.:icon_204-2: Seriously though, I just love the bees and their products. No other reason needed really:winner1st:.
