    Pollen Images

Mo, Could you please give the full method you use: Sawyer's Book uses Glycerine Jelly stained with basic fuchsin, Maurer's book also uses Glycerine jelly but has called in glycerine in the text. The stain is also Basic Fucsin. I have never used parctamount on pollen, and am worried that the...

AFB warning - Should I inspect?

The rule of less than 3 feet more than 3 miles is based on the theory that bees forage over a 1.5mile radius. The idea being that if the distance between the two hives is less than two radii, the foraging bees might cover territory they knew from the old hive. Thus the theory is 1.5 mile radius...

Apiguard treatment, feeding and open entrances

:iagree: I have read the FAQ which is a general sheet covering multi-climates. The important instructions are those on the label. These are the ones which apply to the medicine which you bought and are using.

Apiguard treatment, feeding and open entrances

Not necessarily so: the Instructions on the box state that the first tray is placed on for two weeks, after this period that tray is replaced with a second tray which is left on until the tray is empty. This might take more than the extra two weeks. The older instructions stated that the...

The important thing is to do the full treatment that is first tray in for two weeks the second one is added for a further four weeks making a total treatment of six weeks. Do a mite count after the treatment is complete. It should be Zero. The one time...

    Nosema symptoms !!!

:iagree: I didn't look at the photo. K wing could be due to Acarine, and is not likely to be due to nosema. Dysentery on combs is the major symptom of Nosema apis, but Nosema cerenae does not necessarily show any symptoms.

    Nosema symptoms !!!

A bailey frame change is completely natural you are moving the queen only clean frames and then removing the soiled frames and disinfecting them with acetic acid (another natural product) Thymolated syrup is reputed to work for nosema however thymol does not readily dissolve in syrup. Hive...

Keith, will you put the frame into the freezer and bring to Gormanston where we can do a proper examination. To deal with the frame wrap in newspaper and then in plastic. I also protect with with cardboard. Ruary

    Nosema symptoms !!!

Get someone to help you with a 'bailey Frame Change' this will move to bees onto clean combs. without loss of brood. When the brood has all hatched from the lower box, remove it and fumigate it with 80% acetic acid for a week. This will kill spores of nosema in that box and on the frames. Feed...

Will they clear out dead sealed brood?

Remove the comb from the frame and destroy it. It probably has varroa mites in the cells. If the brood is dead there is no point in having the comb anyway. The bees can re-draw comb if you need to.

    Elastic Bands.

OK I understand the Big Ping, but where do rubber bands fit into a Bailey Frame change??:facts:

Bees not hatching and dead in cells

Well, cell cappings are naturally slightly convex. If they are flat then they must be considered to be sunken. With afb the cell contents become gooey at a certain stage, similarly the ropiness only occurs at a certain stage of decomposition. Scale, can be hard to see is the final stage of...

    Efb

Looks very like E.F.B. to me. The matchstick test is mainly for AFB, where the thread has a characteristic appearance and will pull to about one inch. EFB has been known to thread but very much thinner.
