Pollinating strawberries in a poly tunnel

Hi, Does anyone have experience of the above, please? I have been asked to provide stocks for a new pick your own site and have been doing some research with very different answers. The two extremes are: a) bees can't cope with polytunnels/greenhouses b) bees will work in the...

Old brood comb and frames: recycle or chuck?

Fair points from all those who at least save the wax and use the frames for something productive. I was thinking of those I know who just chuck frames -wax 'n' all - onto a bonfire...

Old brood comb and frames: recycle or chuck?

I agree with Enrico! I can't bear the thought of all the energy going in to felling the trees, transporting them, milling the wood into frames and distributing them (how many stages have I left out....Hivemaker excepting, as I know he cuts the trees and turns them directly into frames etc)...

Anyone know the dimensions of this item?

I have long used starter strips for cut comb - the bees love them. I interleave with (commercially produced) foundation and they draw and start to fill the starter strips before they have a sniff at the foundation. It does lead to "imperfect" cut comb as they build drone comb for the lower...

    Breeding from superseded queen's.

My take re size of superseded queens: I have one colony that has superseded every year/every other year for the past 6 years. The old queen and daughter are usually both seen in early spring. It has been, consistently, one of the top performing colonies I have. The queens have been "normal"...

    Grafting, tips and tricks

Tried a Chinese grafting tool as it has the flexible "slide" - it just wrecked larvae, being huge and very coarse. Tried a purpose made stainless grafting tool, but next to a newly hatched larva it was like a sledgehammer! A lovely little 000 paintbrush, moistened with spit, does the job for...

Recommend a plant for best results

A tree? pussy willow/fruit/Chinese bee tree/horse chestnut/tulip tree/lime???? Spread out a tree and it gives a heck of a lot more flowers for the area planted. Might have to wait a bit for anything other than willow, though!!;)

    Beesuit repairs?

Ask around your association. There will probably be several people competent to do repairs to the suit - it's only a boiler suit, after all. A veil repair is relatively straightforward, too. Saved myself £32 many years ago on a re-veil. Suit (and veil!) still going strong. PS Replacing...

    Biscuits

Hi Heather Here's a recipe that always goes down really well at meetings.....and took first prize at the Welsh National Honey Show:) Honey Biscuits Ingredients 120g / 5oz butter 1 rounded teaspoon ground cinnamon 100g / 4oz caster sugar (plus extra for coating) 1 egg yolk 2 large...

Does warming honey jars before filling reduce frosting?

Yes, if it's for show. But not to reduce frosting... imho I think frosting happens after the jar has cooled down...

The tip of the iceberg ?

Couldn't agree more - at all! It's so depressingly predictable. Ah, people are ahead of you maaf, have you noticed how many lawns no longer need a lawnmower? Ahh, the most salient point of all. When will people wake up and realise that we can't just keep on breeding... Only yesterday I...

    mouse guard question

But if you've already got deep entrances, you could turn a regular wooden entrance block into a "portcullis" type mouseguard by hammering frame pins into the ("underside") of the entrance at, say, 8mm intervals.

    £1 for 1lb

Late 1980s, in this neck of the woods, £1.20/lb, but prices crashed during the miners' strike and took a long time to recover.... honey being non-essential for most folk

Wax cleaning and a bruheat boiler

Thanks Finman. I'm afraid the title is misleading - "boiler" is just the name of the equipment - I don't intend to boil the stuff, just heat it to melting, but thanks for making sure I don't do it wrong. Ta

Wax cleaning and a bruheat boiler

Thanks for the clarification re copper and wax. And great idea for filtering wax out of the boiler. I'll give it a go! Thank you

Wax cleaning and a bruheat boiler

Thanks Marton, good points. Fortunately, I still have the thermostat that came with the boiler, so there is a reasonable degree of control over the temp. The (replacement) element is copper coloured, rather than the usual "metal" colour of a kettle element, (though I have seen contradictory...
