    This just annoys me

ditto ditto - and spin slowly to start, then build up gradually. Much as I do with a full load, in fact!

I'll kick this off with Chris's post.

Yes, I've seen the above, but this is definitely varroa "captured" in the capping. I will have to risk propolising my camera!

I'll kick this off with Chris's post.

Has anyone seen mites "embedded" in brood cappings. I keep meaning to take a pic but, stupidly, never take my camera when out with the bees. I've seen it for about the last three years. Varroa are stuck, almost "submerged" in the upper layer of the cappings. I wondered if it is a deliberate...

    Keeping Warre's commercially

I tried OSBs as I liked the idea of just one size of box but a) the box itself is very heavy, b) it takes 12 frames, not 11 so there's no saving of weight there and, so, c) I can't lift them when full of honey! I use deep nationals as supers to get comb drawn, but have to go the the faff...

    Does honey expand?

I'm afraid i often have honey at 18%+ and I only extract frames that are more or less completely capped as I have the horrors of fermentation. I have had as low as 16% - but rarely.

    Does honey expand?

For info, the fact that frames are capped doesn't always mean that the honey is proper. I uncapped some frames a few years ago, following a very heavy flow, and the honey poured out. It tested at 22%.

    cut comb question

I don't think it's the heather that's crystallizing(sp.?), but the other honeys that are collected at the same time. Eg. rosebay willowherb is a very crunchy honey when crystallized...

Selling honey at the gate: is weight info on the label mandatory?

Back to the beginning.... I was advised that it's not legal to simply amend a weight on a label.... Best thing is get in touch with your Trading Standards officers in the Council. They deal with "weights and measures" and are likely to be only too happy to advise.

Spot The Queen...Don't spoil it for others. PM me if you want to say where she is

Ooops, I feel quite foolish now! I didn't twig that this was Tasmania....(I know, there's a clue on the profile...:oops:). Quite exciting though, to see Braula! Haven't seen it for donkeys

    Plate warming cabinet

Thank you all for your replies. Sorry, Newbeeneil, I didn't clarify - I was wondering if I could use a tube with thermostat on its own? without the need for a controller...

    Plate warming cabinet

Would something like this, complete with thermostat work? Though I can't see any indication of the temperature range...

    Plate warming cabinet

Thanks Pargyle. I used to have a fridge with a light bulb, but gave it away. P'raps I can get a replacement, de-gassed fridge at the recycling tip - if I can get an appointment! I know a spark, and he owes me! Then all I'd need is the ST1000 controller and a tube heater. Summat like...

    Another one for Caz

Still catching up, and just found this thread. Here's a death's head hawk moth that made the mistake of wandering into a hive at the west end of the Gower peninsula. I wonder if the bees would have completely entombed it in propolis if they hadn't been interrupted....
