Eurax (crotamiton) is excellent for the itching - you can buy it in Tesco/Boots. Even comes as a hydrocortisone version or you can just put a blob of Eurax and a blob of HC and rub both in.

    Savage chickens

When my son was about 3, we were walking hand in hand and a cockerel ran up his back and attacked him. It too did not see out the night. When I served it up, my son asked "Is this the one that pecked me?" "Yes darling, eat up." Not a scrap was left!

Excellent idea - will definitely make one. Thanks.

    Savage chickens

I know...sounds a bit brutal. I prefer an air rifle - less hands on and no chance of being bitten. One shot seems to do the trick instantly. Not sure there is any nice way of killing something, but they have stripped most of the bark from one of my young oak trees so let the battle commence!

Did you know that it's illegal to release a grey squirrel once you have caught it? You have to humanely destroy it - drowning is not allowed. It's classed as an invasive species. People have been prosecuted so just be aware...

    Filter for wax cappings

I double sieve and rest in a settling tank, then decant into jars. The last few jars can be a bit scummy but I don't mind and neither do the family so we eat that ourselves - I reckon it's where all the goodness is ;). Certainly hasn't done us any harm.

    Grouchy guards

Hives bonkers this year. First inspections 1 of the 4 went mad ASA I opened the hive and continued to buzz me after I had inspected the other 3 who were really calm. 2nd inspections 1st colony started off calm and then suddenly got really mad even though it was a really calm gentle inspection...

    Hive Monitor

I followed the links but am non the wiser about the weight monitoring. It would be useful of someone could post photos of their set up I have followed the links but couldn't find details of a hive weight monitor. @robmort - I would really appreciate photos or diagrams or sketches, please.

More details of both, please. Any photos? Any plans/diagrams? I can't work these things out for myself but I can follow a set of instructions.

Poll: Should it be legal to use the word "Raw" on labels to describe unheated, non-pressure filtered honey

The main problem with rules arises when the rules aren't applied to everyone (Christmas party, anyone?) If Trading Standards don't have the manpower to apply this rule to everyone, then they shouldn't be allowed to apply it to sellers who they see as easy pickings. It doesn't really make much...

    Sensible purchase of equipment

You're not really confused. You're just being picky.

    Sensible purchase of equipment

You don't have to use rose hives. You can use any boxes that are the same size. I know people who just use supers, then everything is interchangeable. I like this idea but have lots of brood boxes which I don't want to waste. I've had brood boxes full of honey before and they are far too heavy...

    Sensible purchase of equipment

Doesn't the Rose hive use the same size boxes throughout? A bit bigger than a national super but probably doesn't make that much difference.

    Sensible purchase of equipment

Thornes usually have a good sale after Christmas. If you sign up for their newsletter, they will email you when it is imminent. Be aware that they sell out of some sale items really quickly so it is best to have your list ready. If you can't afford enough supers, buy lots of frames. You can...

Id please - "grasshopper" and caterpillars devouring gooseberry bush

My gooseberry bushes have been completely stripped of leaves this year. Didn't see it happening but I have been left with just the branches and the berries (which are very small this year).
