    Abandoned Bee Hives

You have to show you took reasonable steps to discover who is the owner to prevent any chance of being prosecuted. In addition it is advisable to contact the local police so they can record the 'find' (get a property report number and keep any receipt they give you). Rest assured they will...

    Sugar 59p x 1kg

Good to know, but for me an extra 30kg is enough as I already have an existing stash at home!

    Sugar 59p x 1kg

I've just realised I posted the below on a thread about honey prices - perhaps because I was pre-occupied by other things and was sorting out some honey jars in the kitchen. :sorry: Anyway, I'll repost it here in case anyone needs to search threads for current sugar prices. ******* If anyone...

    Honey price

If anyone needs to stock up Booker and Macro have a 7 day offer from today.... 15x1kg pack of granulated sugar for £6.99 which is about 47p a kg. Booker have Tate and Lyle and Whitworths. Macro are just advertising Whitworths so not sure if they have T&L as well. I've just got 30kg T&L from...

    10 Year Pollinator Strategy

Election next year and they need something 'green' to put in their electioneering blurb.

    Spare Queen

When you hear about people with a small amount of colonies losing queens, or having badly mated queens drone laying in the Autumn, it seems such a shame that only a month or two earlier others were squishing good older queens. Pity people don't retain them and offer to others if they are good...

14 by 12 s or just lots of supers?

Why don't you just buy converter boxes to turn your standard nationals deeps into 14x12? Keeps the existing BBs in use and still frees up the supers.

How to store an empty hive?

I'd take it home, clean it, then leave it in the garden until needed. Less likely to be stolen too as you can keep an eye on it.

What do seasonal bee inspectors do in the winter?

No. SHB would probably be treated the same as varroa was. F&M has a greater economic impact hence the bigger response.

What do seasonal bee inspectors do in the winter?

I think/guess the reason for the retainer is to save going through the 'just hired' costly CRB checks for all the seasonal staff every year. They can also be called up to immediately assist if there is a foot and mouth or similar problem as well.

    "domesticating" feral bees

In a shook swarm burning live brood and emerging bees is a bit brutal and in my opinion shows lack of empathy. Far better to put in bin bag and pop into the freezer for 24 hrs to kill the contents before burning. Also you can OA the shook swarm, and then insert either a frame of uncapped brood...

    Thousands of bees available!

As previously stated it's not the removal of the bees that is the issue, if it was just that there'd be no problems. It's the demolition of whatever is in the way and height above the ground which is the barrier to the solution. Do you really want someone with no building skills ripping open...

    Thousands of bees available!

To be fair to the swarm collectors they are not covered by liability insurance to do this sort of task. If you do a ceiling cut out you could cut through electric cables or central heating pipes. You could also do structural damage. Imagine a roof that later let's in water causing thousands of...

    Thousands of bees available!

If they could be cut out from inside the building it would be safer, and damage such as plaster boarding could be done at your leisure. If you do it from outside it means opening the building up to the weather. Search 'honeybees ceiling' and 'honeybees roof' on YouTube to get an idea of what is...

    Thousands of bees available!

I've just looked and they have not been online since the original post. If they could give a better description of where they are it would help - no loft space? so where are they? Cavity? under tiles? What is above the bedroom ceiling? Is it their own accommodation or rented? Is it a flat...

    Hello from the Peak District

I imagine that we shall not be going ahead with becoming bee keepers and that the hive will end up as a garden feature along with the bird tables and other bits of decorative wood and iron that are scattered about the place. In that case make sure you seal the entrance to prevent thousands of...

    Alternative insulation

I've used nylon type carpet (not wool) for nearly 10 years and have never had mildew or damp. Just make sure the roof is well fitted and ventilated.

    Alternative insulation

Old carpet cut into squares and placed in layers on the crownboard works well (carpet side down). I used rubble sacks filled with straw to insulate a plywood nuc placed inside a WBC last winter.
