    Worst scaremongering article this year?

Is it a nationality trait? Perhaps the Polish can make more money here through graft than at home hence their enthusiasm for this work. Would they be as enthusiastic working in Poland in the same jobs for less? Not all British are lazy and I bet there are some lazy Poles, it's the motivated...

    Possible Winter losses - depressed!

They're probably clustered lower down eating lower stores first. Try putting your ear to the side of the hive and giving it a tap on a mild day - you can usually hear them. Nothing you can do so no point in loosing sleep over it.

Labels - so how can this possibly be legal?

I did say they'd fob you off. Now if you'd made a mistake on your labels that would be another matter.....

    Queen bee sting ?

Not happened to me but I read somewhere that they may sting you if you have handled other queens. I assume they are programmed only to sting other queens rather than something threatening the colony.

    BBKA ADM Small Hive Beetle

If we had it here the movement of bees from this country would be banned in a blink of an eye by Europe.

    WBC mouse problem

Yes, and there are still wasps around - saw some today.

    WBC mouse problem

The difference is that mesh is to keep them in, the cone to let them out. Bees get 'lost' in the higher internal space above the internal boxes, the cones provide an escape route. http://www.dave-cushman.net/bee/coneescapes.html

What I want for Christmas is .....

I put them on a large deep roasting tin which sits across two rings on the gas hob. You can turn them over or just press them until submerged. Trying a home made steamer next year powered by a wallpaper stripper as it may be less time consuming.

    BBKA ADM Small Hive Beetle

A ban is unlikely in my opinion as it would have to be a ban of bee imports from the whole of Europe. If they just ban Italian bees the importers will just ship them to France or elsewhere where they can be then forwarded to the UK. Besides, if they ban imports the demand will still be there...

    Isolation Starvation???

If memory serves me correctly you could spray Fumagillin B solution directly onto them in emergency situations. You could try spraying thin Thymol syrup as a last resort - worth a try if there is no other option available.

What I want for Christmas is .....

In my opinion a waste of time. I have one a bit bigger (like a small vacuum cleaner) and even that is useless as it doesn't produce enough steam. The main issue is that you need a confined space so the heat and steam are contained. If you go on YouTube there are frame steamers made from old...

    Liverpool

I used to go to the city centre pubs and clubs nearly every weekend in the 80s with no problems. Like anywhere it was the surrounding run-down estates that were risky, and probably that's where a lot of the student accommodation was. The yobs tend to prowl areas where there is a concentration...

    Liverpool

The Philharmonic is worth a visit. Also try googling best pubs in Liverpool and check out their websites. http://www.heritagepubs.org.uk/pubs/historic-pub-interior-entry.asp?pubid=111 Worth googling what's on too - bands playing etc. for the weekend you're there.

Labels - so how can this possibly be legal?

I suspect nothing will happen as Trading Standards will be looking for any reason not to take on a multi national company that can afford expensive legal teams. The cost of rebranding, withdrawing stock etc. would be huge so they would take it to court. On the other hand a bunch of beekeepers...

Small hive beetle in mainland Europe.

No. Just an observation after reading the account of them going down steps etc. If they can't climb there would be an opportunity to explore a way of blocking them from somewhere to pupate. I was not suggesting it as a solution in itself, as such a structure would turn into a pond in wet...

Small hive beetle in mainland Europe.

I wonder if a raised lip around a concrete stand would work, can they climb up vertical barriers?

    adding an Eke

You can make an eke very quickly. Just get wood that will create one just slightly higher than the fondant sits. I find that you need to tape a slim eke in place otherwise it slips out of place too easily. You can then pack any voids over the fondant with bubble wrap or similar, replace crown...
