    mouse gaurd

I keep the entrance block in and cut all my mouse guards into three, each piece being big enough for the reduced entrance and I put them on in October when the ivy is finishing.

    Honey rather than sugar

Last year a friend had to leave two strong colonies, with two supers that were only half full, in August (it was a poor year if you remember) due to a family emergency. In April he asked me to take them over as he wasn't returning. The supers had been pretty well filled with mostly Ivy and the...

    More apidea basics please

Reusing apidea Those of you who use Apidea, do you simply cut back the drawn comb from a previously used Apidea to re use it or do always start with a fresh starter strip?

    When is best time?

Sooner the better, while temperatures are still warm and yes you can feed during the treatment.

    More apidea basics please

I hadn't realised that it would work without putting more frames in the additional box, will definitely try this, ie, adding the extra extension below with no frames, rather than above with 3 more frames and the feedeer as I have been doing. If Pete has those pictures......

    More apidea basics please

I'm at last having some success with queen rearing in Apidea. I have 3 that will do nicely for re-queening in August and two that have yet to start laying. I have one that is now bursting with bees, on 8 mini frames with brood in 6. Can I move the bursting one into a polynuke, I've tried the...

    Sugar Sugar !

Good work, from now on my 1-1 will always be 5-3.25, being almost half way between my previous 1-1 and 2-1. Without using distilled water it remains considerably cheaper than Ambrosia, even at bulk rates.

    solid floors

I use them to overwinter a few colonies in windy locations, last year the 3 with solid floors overwintered stronger than all my other OMF colonies, obviously other factors as well, but interesting. I use them in the summer for my bait hives, they definitely do better than the OMF's for this...

    Colony or nuc?

I shall be making up nukes in August to go through the winter, last year I made 6 and only lost one (poorly mated queen) so getting a nuke now will probably be fine. (unless winter starts in September this year........)

    Empty frame or new foundation

Kiss If you replace them 'as is' you can produce cut comb. If you strip and put foundation in you can extract the honey.
