    Winter insulation?

I use a super, rather than a special eke and simply push the insulation down tight to the feeder board, otherwise exactly right. I got my foam from skips outside the local college when they were building. Last year I made my own and this year I've bought fondant and simply cut the 2.5kg packs...

    Winter insulation?

I saw your cosy at Boad, very neatly done. I had considered something similar but having good results with my top only insulation I thought I'd stick with it and see if yours presented any problems before wrapping all the way round. Recycling, love it.

    Winter insulation?

I do this when the Ivy is finishing. I also put some fondant (IN A CONTAINER) in the cavity if I'm concerned about level of stores. I always put a take away container in the cavity and cover any extra holes in a feeder board so the bees don't eat away the insulation. I also put some fondant on...

Any one using the Happykeeper varroa floor

I don't use them, however I have rescued two colonies that had them. Both had very angry bees, probably because the tubes no longer quite fitted the frame and wasps were able to get in and rob in quite large numbers. Whether this was because it was badly made (they were t horns floors) or whether...

    Breed of Bee

I've bee working with some melifera melifera this year (also awaiting DNA :-) and the latest colony from a selected queen has mostly dark bees but some 10% with either single or double stripes. Good example of multiple mating and some interesting articles recently on double banding pointing to...

    Doing the maths

Our local Association buys in bulk and we pay 80p ltr for *ambrosia* . Sugar at the local cash and carry is just 70p kilo. I use sugar for the bulk of feeding both winter and a bit of spring/new colony feeding, but I do buy some invert syrup as it seems to store better and I like having some on...
