cheers for the responses, might try and watch them today if sun sticks around, does anyone else find it mesmerising just to sit and watch these busy little creatures pottering about?

    Wasp Nests And???

ermm looks likea tibial bone to me any idea what the circumference of the bone is might give some indication as to its previous owner, BTW don't touch it just a visual guess and of course keep us updated.

    ? Bees with nosema

national hive, solid floor, deep roof, no added insulation, fairly windy hill top, reduced entrance block, not a massively strong hive into winter, well feed in autumn, api life var given. As for type of bee well they are actually a mix of midland beeks bees and whoever the queen mated with. I...

    ? Bees with nosema

Yesterday with the good weather I wandered up to see the girls all seemed to be out enjoying the sunshine so couldn't get too close but came back later with suit on to take a closer look. I had a bee from my weaker colony land on my hand and promtly poo all over it very liquid like. Now I'm a...

Ebay does it again - how desperate would you be?

can't ebay stop others from selling stuff like this? The potential for problems if the seller is unscrupulous theres no telling where those frames have been.

    Melt Rather Than Extract?

I have done it a couple of times for the odd frame or 2 it seems to work well on the very small scale wax to the top honey to the bottom, having said that I think you have to be careful what temp you take the liquid mess to. The honey seems to taste okay though.

    Bad Weather

its been real windy my way to checked on the girls this afternoon they have a novel method of stopping themselves getting blown away it involves one of 2 options either hiding up my sleeve or just simply jabbing the sting in. Go with what works I guess lol.

    Hive Stand and Ants

hmm if the ants do eat the varroa and don't eat all the honey and other things precious to the bees and their keepers then that would be a fantastic symbiotic relationship.

    should there be more?

I might have missed it somewhere but has anyone suggested about trying to get on a swarm list somewhere, sure it might come to nothing you might not get a swarm but if you do you could be quids in especially if it is a prime swarm. Even if there is a queen in there it will take a reasonable...

    Starting with only laying queen

Err it would be nice to give the guy some answers rather than useless twaddle about what the forum should or shouldn't be. The guy might have read books but is simply asking a question to other members of the forum so don't just shoot him down in flames, not very nice and not very helpful. There...

    Our Swarm is in Trouble!

this is really interesting, reading these posts i realise thta I had exactly the same thing happen to my bees not a true swarm but an artificial one. Queen there after the AS and definately not damaged a week later no queen and about 5 sealed queen cells an no eveidence of a swarm strange that...

Play cups? lets put this to bed.

you can see both play cups and queen cells. the frame is on its side and you are looking at the bottom bar. Play cups in the middle of picture and queen cell/s although the capped ones are covered in bees are towards the bottom of the pic.

    reassurance needed please!

hi freethorpe I am fairly new and I have used both marigolds and these http://www.beebasic.co.uk/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4&products_id=24 although I think the price has gone up. The marigolds are pretty good and cheap however I did get stung through them, these blue ones...

    queen cells and mesh floors

this is more of a query as i'm trying to understand why, but has any body else ever encountered a queen cell which has been built up from a mesh floor? I noticed this cell when looking through the hive and there were around 10 bees crawling all over it. Initially I thought it might just be a...

How to prevent a cast swarm

okay thanks for that PH I think the majority is sealed honey so I will try bruising it. What do they do with it do they just move it somewhere else or consume it?

How to prevent a cast swarm

indeed it is like fortune telling. Thurrock how can I make sure that there is room for her to lay, they seem intent on filling up newly drawn foundation with honey! The remaining frames have brood on already but presumably by the time the new queen is back in lay a lot of this will have empptied...

How to prevent a cast swarm

hi thurrock I thought about this and I really hope your right but the other thing that has me puzzled is that both hives are bringing in copious amounts of pollen still, They have both been queenless for at least 7 days and I though that bees bringing in pollen meant that a queen had been laying...
