"sugar or nectar syrup as first ingredient" that describes the main constituent of true honey. honest answer is i don't feed sugar to my productive bee colonies during the foraging season.

    Alternative insulation

it should be noted that a £3.50 1200x500x50 sheet from wickes will do two hives single layered (or a single hive with a fondant feeder cut out in lower level) PLUS a thick dummy board suitable for even deep hives. not bad value IMHO even if you can't charm the builders.

    Honey Fudge

"So lessons learnt are that you need buy a decent thermometer" you don't really need it once you realise that when it gets to about the correct temperature the rate of change of colour (darkening) increases significantly, such that for every stir you are mixing obviously different shades.

    Swapping hives

as above - best time of day is when most bees flying so there's less to play with and plenty of time for the stragglers to get back in the hive before evening. "makes perfect sence if you never did it before" even newbie one hive owners will likely have started with a nuc which required...

    Swapping hives

strange question. as easy as a normal inspection. set up new hive (floor, brood box) next to or near old one. transfer one frame at a time, ensuring queen goes across on one. shake remaining bees out of old brood box into or in front of hive. reposition new hive. job done. OR you can of...
