In shopping around, it seems the entry costs for getting into this can range from a few hundred pounds to anything in the thousands. I wasn't expecting to find poly hives could be cheaper than the wooden ones, but that seems to be the case at a couple of the retailers. I've also seen some hives...

I’m not buying yet, this is all just exploratory at the moment and I agree with you about having a go first. 🙂 Thank you!

This might be a silly question, but I'll ask it anyway... With the 11 frame poly hives, do you still need a dummy board?

Thanks. I just looked at a review of those and yes, I think they're be a bit tricky for me as a newly. I took at look at the 11 frame Abelo poly hive and it worked out cheaper, so better for the beginner and better for the pocket. Thanks for the tip. :) Following a few comments in this...

Thanks for this. I've just taken a look at the Abelo 12 frame poly hive. Very interesting! I think I'll go this route.

I might be able to deal with the frames myself, as I've watched a few YouTube videos on that. It'll be anything else that's likely beyond me. Even the flat-pack hives looked a bit daunting. (Plus I want them to last! :ROFLMAO:)

Not very, unfortunately. I've got a condition that affects my hands, so I'd struggle with constructing anything myself.

Here's my shopping list so far: 2 National 14x12 Hives (each comes with varroa floor, crown board, roof and entrance blocks) 2 National hive stands 2 queen excluders 2 dummy boards 4 extra super frames 22 National 14x12 frames with foundation 88 shallow SN4 frames with foundation Hive tool...

I'm starting to create a shopping list of things I'll need next year. One question I have - do National and Langstroth hives have any interchangeable parts or are they completely incompatible? (e.g., would I be able to use shallow frames in both, or do I need specific Langstroth shallow frames...

The law and bee keeping , the use of agricultural land for bees

I've recently applied for and been permitted mixed use on agricultural land, so that my wife can keep horses. It's split 50/50, down the middle. Half is equestrian use and half is agricultural use. The equestrian side will be used exclusively for the keeping of horses. This use also allows the...

Thanks both. I'll add it to my list.

I'm now a member of the Nottinghamshire Beekeepers Association. :D If anybody is a member, perhaps I'll see you at the meetings or training sessions. I'm looking at February for the beginners course. My plan will be to get two or three colonies once I'm a good way into the training sessions...

My wife routinely walks mud through the house, transports horse poo samples on my car seat and washes her clothes with horse treats still in the pockets. 😖 When it comes to being house proud, there’s no danger! 😂 That’s my plan and it’s good to see I’m thinking along the right lines. I’m...

That's exactly the feeling I have, I think without help I'll fail and the bees' welfare will be at risk. I want happy healthy bees. Here are a few more photos I've taken (one isn't strictly bee related):
