I do the same it makes it a lot more exciting because everytime you check the hive you never know what going to be there, last year my bees turned up out of the blue and they were really friendly bees

surely it is just the fact that the bees are covered in powder so they groom themselves and each other in which case i would just stick to powdered sugar

I ended up with a nice swarm i used to work them without protection and they were very quick to produce honey and they didn't swarm or make queen cells, so i was very lucky

Hi scunnybee, i don't even bother buying any bees i try my luck at baiting my hive with swarm lure or lemon grass oil, i don't know if its just me or if others get a real thrill out of trying to catch bees in this way, it worked last year in my top bar hive fingers are crossed for this year...

thanks for the comments everyone, PH i was also thinking of building extra supers out of ply and simply adding as needed, the only reason i wanted to use poly is purely for winter but i suppose i could take off the ply supers and over winter the bees in the poly bb is this a good idea?

yes i filled it with frames with wired foundation, is this the right way or should i just have a few frames in and then add more as needed by the bees?
