    The joys of extracting

    Hello from Cyprus
  2. N

Anyone bringing shade to their bees for the forecast heat wave?

Two days of heat and people are panicking, here in Cyprus it is 30+ and often 40+ from May till the end of October. Roofs painted white and water source nearby to avoid problems.

    Mating nucs absconding- any theory

The mini+ abscond too, I have found that death's-head hawk-moths cause a major upset during summer and autumn, I fit 8mm grates to the entrances. Ants also cause problems, it is probably worth checking the apiary at night to see if there is any activity.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Cyprus: It was just 3C last night here on the coast (-7 in the mountains), this morning as soon as it hit 10C, out they came. Mini+ hives.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Here in Cyprus I could never imagine that I would have to wear thermal underwear and a pullover under my beesuit because of cold. BUT, when the cells have to be removed from the finishers they have to come out.

    Requeening my bees from hell

They are both European populations but do not combine well. Brother Adam tried many times to include carnica in his lines, but without apparent success. However if you study the present day pedigrees you may notice that there are some crossings with carnica. I do not know if these combinations...

    Mini Plus Frames

Make your own, the plastic and German wooden ones are junk.

    Requeening my bees from hell

Most probably carnica is the problem.

Frame spacing and size of drones.

Actually there is no link or scientific evidence, just our observations. So why ask for it? OK, I give up! No more input from me. I have better things to do. Thank you!

Frame spacing and size of drones.

When doing II, we have noted that the large burly drones are usually "firing blanks". Medium sized drones are much better quality. Just our observations, if that is if any help.

    Housel Positioning of frames

Re small cell: The "Busbees" had a fair bit of A. m. capensis in them, hence the easy acceptance of 4,9.

    Housel Positioning of frames

    AMM imports?

Some posts on this thread need to be clarified: Posts#5 and 12: There are no exports of AMM from Cyprus. Post#10: Cypriot queen bees are presented as being expensive; the fact is they are around the price of imported queens from Italy and certainly much cheaper than the Scottish produced...
