Setting up a bait hive advice please

So what do you do if you are new to beekeeping and have no used stuff? Apart from Lemongrass oil that is.

    Hornet

Any clues as to how to do this? I live on the south coast of England and possibly likely to be one of the first to see an Asian Hornet. Over the past few years we have had hornets in and around the house and last year I found a nest but no idea what type they were?

    Latest beemail and hive theft

Only 24 hrs ??? You gotta leave them hanging there long enough for all the local Beeks to prod them with their pitch forks !!

    Favourite sites to see

No bees yet so I have to be content with watching someone else's bees on my apple trees blossom! Not many bees this year. This time last year the trees were positively buzzing..

    Super No

Some of these comments possibly relate to smaller than necessary gaps in the queen excluder. I have seen quoted 4.3mm as optimum. My new, unused, wire QE has gaps slightly smaller than this ( measured with an electronic vernier caliper) at 3.9mm to 4.2mm. Does anyone know the minimum gap...

    Ted Hooper

To get back to Ted Hooper ...... I have an old ( 1st Ed ) copy and my question is : has the new updated version changed that much? I can imagine that pest control is vastly different now as things like Varroa and SHB were unknown in 1976 but these things can be had from websites like BeeBase...

    Cleaning frame

Should the cleaning medium be Washing Soda - as Stephen states -or Caustic (Soda) as Polyhive suggests ? I don't think they are the same.

    NUC or Package Bees?

Hi I am a Newbee looking to get some bees this year having failed to source some last year. I made some enquiries locally last year and though I had some promises I am now becoming worried that I may loose out again. I really wanted "local" bees but due to the worries outlined above I am...

    Nuc Wanted in Dorset

Hi. I am trying to get started with some bees, but all of my contacts made last year have dried up. Has anyone got (or will have in the next few months) a Nuc on National frames for sale? Many thanks Regards Bill

    Bee alergy - question

Hedgerow Pete is correct in that Bee stings are acidic and wasp stings are alkaline. The way I remember it (from my Boy Scout days ) is from the remedies used to neutralise the sting - use the opposite i.e. alkaline for bee stings and acidic for wasp stings. Cheap & cheerful alkaline is...

    Anaphylactic shock

Cheers Guys. Thanks for the advice. I think Hedgerow Pete's advice about deliberately getting the Newbees stung is a great idea - at least it lets them know if beekeeping is going to work out for them both in terms of pain and Annie Shock. We did n't go that far at the training course that I...

    Anaphylactic shock

Hi I am a NewBee ( or more accurately a NoBees Yet ) here and this is my first post. I have handled bees before ( during my intro beekeeping course last year) but I have not yet been stung so do not know if I might suffer from Annie Shock. I know that Annie Shock is serious stuff and this...
