My four Nucs nearly at 8 frames each

Thanks for the encouragement Oliver90, I forgot to say that the Nucs are not for resale, I want to build up colony numbers. As you say 'trying to run before you can walk' - Is the methodology I have outlined good or is there a better way forward to achieve this. Finer points need honing of...

My four Nucs nearly at 8 frames each

I want to increase these when they are colonies in full brood box, about two weeks yet? I thought to split two or maybe three of them each into two Nucs and leave the existing colonies and Queens to build up again. With the split, I thought three frames each, brood and stores, into Langstroth...

    Deformed wing

An elderly chap who bough a nucleus last September and made it through the winter, keeps one hive and is allegedly being advised by a beekeeper who knows a lot about bees - hmm. Speaking to him yesterday, he described the miserable circumstances in his hive, varroa being most of the population...

    A hello and questions!

No doubt boxes had been used to keep bees but Langstroth was the man who designed the first 'logical' bee box or hive. Langstroth are the industry standard and yes, show results when bees are used to pollinate crops if that's what you mean. There is a vast amount of information on the web...

    polystyrene Bee Hives

Love them, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, the civilised world, (Finman??!!) all use them and accept their worth. Mod Beek - give good service and are going through stock reception at moment. http://tinyurl.com/4xlovfj

    polystyrene Bee Hives

With the Screwfix spraygun comes a small funnel. You add water to paint and count how many seconds it takes to run through the little hole at the bottom. Match to manufacturer's recommendations and spray. Do a wall first, that way you can gain confidence in the amount, gain skill in the use...

Anti-swarming system - too good to be true?

This: http://tinyurl.com/3m9ernw from Mod Beek caught my eye but would greatly appreciate expert opinions from Hivemaker, Polyhive, Finman, Rooftops and any thoughts please. As they are in professional use in Finland, they seem to be the answer to the eternal problem. Is that really the...

Insurance - Hive theft or Bee theft

Hi all, I have been looking for some insurance that would cover theft of bees or hives, or both - nothing suitable so far. I thought NFU might be the ideal company but they're a bit woolly. Any ideas or facts anybody please.

    5 frame nuc for £160

Well done! Shame there are not more like Polyhive who take pride in what they sell instead of those who jump on newcomers like dogs on a bone in the anticipation of making profit at any cost; while laughing up their sleeves. Local associations have been known to harbour a pack who groom...

    Which hive would you get?

One that's very good for the bees - Polystyrene, will last for 30 years +/- 2C summer/winter, no rot, no damp, warm bees in a healthy environment. Only my opinion based on a lot of reading and research on the web. MB in Devon do a very nice product as do Sw***ty in Denmark.
