Small hive - transfer to a Poly Nuc box?

If the straw was for insulation it should have been in a set up where the bees couldn't get in. I overwinter with a crownboard above any feeding arrangements, and then a 2nd. brood box packed tight with straw, then another cb, then the roof. But I never open up in winter.

At 70 I did my first parapente flight. Great times still to come ! Très bon anniversaire. (Normally you'd get kissed on both cheeks, but covid.............................)

    Christmas

In another mountain place where I lived the "paysans" blamed everything on the fouine (pine marten) even the landing board of one of my hives being eaten away. It's a tradition that goes back for generations whether they have seen the damage or not It was always the fouine. Where I am now, it's...

    Some people are just stupid

It's not just Britain. Here, we have the different councils grouped into what we call "community of communes". These are normally a few largish towns and lots of rural areas. The overall aim is to have several metropoles with associated countryside. The money goes to thebig towns and they hand...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

A few days ago , minus 11° and snow forecast, so I filled some plastic bags with straw and put them around the lang that I'm overwintering a swarm in. I checked them out today and they seem fine (only minus 6° today).

    Suggestions for hedging shrubs please

We harvest the berries of white and blackthorn, mix them up, and make a very good jelly. The blackthorns do spread, but I find it happens very slowly and is easy to control. Not so bad as raspberries.

    Potatoes

I eat all the *too small* ones first. Skins left on, I just slice them and fry in sunflower oil. Delicious. That lasts from July to October and then the bigger ones can be peeled for the Solid Spud dishes.

    Varroa Alert

I've tried tea tree, thyme, lavender etc. There's also a biodynamic method (which I haven't tried) where you boil up dead varroa whilst chanting an incantation then you do other things which I've forgotten and spray it in the hive. I'm not sure of the time of night or the position of the moon. I...

I've read a great deal, and never even heard of Khalil Gibran. He will certainly go to the top of my books to read list. Thanks Murox.

    So true!

Go to Corsica (which is officially considered part of France). Most Corsicans are speaking their local tongue. My children were listening to corsican nursery rhymes on their grandmother's knee before they spoke French. My grandchildren as well (the same old lady).

    So true!

Did Dylan Thomas ever write any poetry in Welsh ? I've never seen any published. Is it a language where stress counts, as in English, or are all syllables given equal value ?

    Christmas

We have regular visits from a couple of goshawks but as there are no geese here, they are happy to peck the tasty bits off my chickens. Iput strings accross the top of the chcken run but one once still got in, but couldn't get out. It had killed 2 hens and I thought "I've got you now!" When I...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Cleared snow from landing board. Uniced entrance holes with a screwdriver. sloped an oven dish across the front of the hive to keep it clear. Looked at weather forecast: temp -2max and rain. Have to make a rainman.

    Christmas

Here in the autumn all the blackbirds disappear :( Mainly tits right now,and for the first time a crested tit. The finches are arriving, mainly green, bull, and chaffinch. Soon they'll be joined by the goldfinches :D and hawfinch. The bonus so far is a bird I've never seen before, never even...

Doesn't a robin only live about a year ? On our bird table it seems to be a different one each winter. :(
