    14 x 12 foundationless frames without wires!!

Thanks RT. I thought all QCs were hook nose shaped to accomodate the length of her abdomen. So just to be clear - are you saying those QCs were not the finished product but still growing? Yikes  - I had a number of those last year (1st year).

    14 x 12 foundationless frames without wires!!

Just observing your photos Nellie and sorry, off topic BUT, Are those two queen cells at the bottom of the frame? The reason I ask is because I saw a number of these last year but was unsure whether they were drone or QC, as the supercedure cells I had seen were almost an inch long. So if they...

Thornes must be feeling the slump-another sale

Argh!! Had to conclude the sale before I received all this advice, to avoid being timed out - bought the knife !!:banghead: I'll email Gill and ask her if I can swop it for one of the better quality forks. They're good like that.

Thornes must be feeling the slump-another sale

Just buying a few things on the sale. In the hope I see my first harvest in May this year (OSR) and need to uncap before extracting, between the plastic uncapping fork and the cold uncapping knife - which is the better option?

    Jackson bee hive (South African)

My brother has recently bought one of these Jackson bee hives as he lives in South Africa. Developed by a beekeeping family, the Jacksons, it's based on the Top Bar hive but with a difference. 1) The structure is made only of a single layer of food grade plastic (corrugated plastic) with...

    Blue Mould

Cedar - Had a similar problem of mould appearing on the underside of the roof in the corners, even with OMF, insulation above etc. Worked out the corner folds to the galvanised roofing (Bees on a Budget) weren't exactly flush allowing driving rain to enter. It was simply solved by working some...

    Where to get mesh from?

Would have thought for storing supers, frames etc., you'd need steel mesh. Rats and mice will nibble through HDPE or fibre glass mesh.

    O.A. = Excess bee poo??

I would like to have my one hive tested for nosema. I don't belong to an association nor have the equipment. Thought I saw somewhere that BCrazy kindly offered this testing service for a small donation to the forum. Do I have my facts wrong? Thanks.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Whenever I apply the first coat of raw linseed it usually soaks in within a matter of minutes, so a 2nd coat is generally applied once I get back to the first piece of timber painted. That said I see you add beewax to the mixture so not sure if that slows down the drying process somewhat.

Plant ideas to fill a space

Unfortunately the Chinese Bee Tree is not something you'll find in most nurseries. Best bet is searching RHS plantfinder in your region or buy the seeds on fleabay. I was fortunate to get some sucker shoots from a fellow forum member which are overwintering nicely in their first year. Good luck.

    Painting poly hives

Thanks for that confirmation.... and do you apply grit to the final masonry coat applied to the inside of the internal feeder or just roughen up the poly before applying paint.

    Painting poly hives

When painting poly with masonry paint or gloss, do you have to apply a primer & undercoat first or do you just apply the masonry or gloss direct onto the poly? I only want to paint two 14 x 12 poly nucs - went to Homebase today and the colours they in 2.5 litre were terrrible e.g. lime yellow...

    Paynes sale

Seems some 14 x 12 poly nucs sold in the sale were the old version (rectangular entrance) and has no entrance disk and some, possibly later orders, received the new version (round hole) with entrance disk. (according to Roger) Sometimes it doesn't pay to get your order in early. :banghead: By...

Plant ideas to fill a space

Chinese Bee Tree If you are refering to the Chinese Bee Tree (Tetradium Daniellii) then the pics below will give you some idea of how popular they are with bees. bee-smilliebee-smilliebee-smilliebee-smillie

    Paynes sale

Not exactly a brochure - their "Poly Mix Hive Care Sheet" - 7th line down. Says "entrance disc" supplied

    Paynes sale

Was the polynuc supposed to come with an entrance disk. Wasn't expecting one but the brochure included in the delivery said it did?

Transferring bees from Nationals to 14 x 12

I did and foregive my incorrect interpretation but your choice of wording did not suggest the queen was placed up there with qx fitted below but merely that she would naturally migrate to the upper box - hence my question.

Transferring bees from Nationals to 14 x 12

But if the Bailey change was done during a flow wouldn't you simply end up with the 14 x 12 new foundation being drawn and filled with honey (above where they like to put it) and the queen forced to continue laying in the standard national below?

Transferring bees from Nationals to 14 x 12

Yes, unless you want to expand, as I do, in which case AS would be an acceptable method.
