    High winter losses

1 of 11 lost a queen at some stage over the winter (some evidence of an attempt at a late supersedure). Will combine and split later in the season. Another was more puzzling. Small brood, but 100s of old dead bees on the OMF (removed). No signs of disease on remaining bees or brood. I got the...

    Combining Colonies

Just back from initial inspections at my out apiary. One hive is Q- (no sign of the Q and zero brood, drone or otherwise - it has plenty of stores). I would like to combine it with a Q+ hive and split again later in the season. Unfortunately the nearest suitable hive is about 15 feet away. Is...

    Quick questions quick answers

Assume it’s May/June in an average healthy hive, what percentage proportion of workers are active foragers? [Marks deducted for all answers that contain the phrase “it depends” or variations thereof].

What did you do in the Apiary today?

All hives given 1Kg Candipolline Gold a couple of days ago. Interestingly, those that still had some plain fondant left, have all abandoned it and switched to the Candipolline. Judging by what I can see through the Perspex covered feed holes and debris on inspection boards, there is huge...

    Attracting a swarm

Back on thread (sort of): Is there any reason why you can’t use a complete hive filled with frames and undrawn wax as a bait hive - or do you stand more chance with an empty hive? Over to the collective wisdom of the Forum...

    First Hive choice advice

If you are thinking of going Poly, Maisie’s Poly Sale starts 3rd(?) Feb. I’m in for 4 x complete 14x12’s - same as rest. Definite advantages in sticking to one hive type.

    Blackthorn flowering now

Not a peep in West Wilts.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

All hives checked for weight this afternoon, negligible reduction over the last 2 weeks. All were flying in the sunshine - 7C here in West Wilts. Also a single large drone seen on landing board.

    Abelo Extractor

I have had the 12 frame radial version for a year now - can’t fault it. Made by Lyson. Mounted on castors (the type that have a brake) to ease movement. Quality piece of kit.

    When are the sales?

    Thanks.
