Moving to Germany for a few years & retiring from beekeeping, for the moment.

Hello I'm moving to Germany for the next 3 years and therefore having to quit beekeeping for the moment. Selling all my equipment and bees - all the kit you need for a small but productive beekeeping operation. All kit, unless specified, was supplied by T******. All kit is less than 5 years...

    Hive Heating!!!

Sounds like a good idea. Did you leave it running all winter and did you have to continuously feed?

    Microscopy for Advanced Husbandry

Are there any micoscopists in my area who can check my 'homework' for the Advanced Husbandry Assessment. I've read the books, dissected and ground up countless bees but I've had no formal tuition - I just need some to confirm or deny if I'm checking for nosema and acarine correctly. Eddie

    Hive on a roof

I kept hive successfully on my garage roof for a number of years. On occasions I had up to 10 hives and Nucs on a single flat roof. It was a bit of a pain recovering supers etc but very secure and handy.

    1st inspection...bit surprised

I'm giving mine 1 to 1 and they're sucking it up. Incidentally what's the consensus on calculating ratios. By weight or by volume? Volume is easier, no scales needed, by I always calculate using kitchen scales!

    Castellation strips too long.

Same problem solved by blunting my wife's kitchen scissors!

    Fellow Beeks

Straps will make the hives easier to move - by thieves!

    Fellow Beeks

You could fit a bracket to the stand on such a way that the floor would have to be removed to unscrew it. Or use a type of frame which isn't that common. I suspect most stolen bees are on national frames.

    Fellow Beeks

The real question is what can you do. Marking hives is pointless as the bees are likely to be transferred to a new box ASAP. Marking frames- they are going to be hidden from view and the apiary is unlikely to be registered on beebase. The best approach seems to be secluded apiaries and covert...

    Stolen Bees - Help!

Moved my bees this afternoon, a farmer has allowed me the use of a small site on a hill overlooking a water meadow. Very hidden- hopefully I'll have no more problems.

    Hello from Hampshire

I've been keeping bees for about 5 years, it's great fun and you meet some fascinating people. Join an association, buy a good book and don't be afraid to ask questions. Best of luck.

    Stolen Bees - Help!

They took my entire hive. I suspect that it was just the frames that they were after and the OMFs, BBs and supers will be dumped as they are easily recognisable.

    Stolen Bees - Help!

The long arm... Has anyone ever been prosecuted for stealing bees/hives/colonies?

    Stolen Bees - Help!

Yes, that sounds like a good idea. I've just invested in a branding iron to mark all of my hardware too.

    Stolen Bees - Help!

I moved to Swindon from Winchester last summer and over the winter I've had a few colonies stolen from the apiary I'm sharing. At this rate I'll be a non beekeeper before the spring - does anyone know of a landowner on the Oxford side of Swindon who'd be happy to have ages hives on his land...

    Damp roofs

I've notices that a couple of my hives have wet roofs, it's as if water has been blown up into the roof space. They are 4 inch roofs. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?
