Swienty Poly Nationals - design change

Everybody's got their own way of doing things I suppose ;) I could of course move all the frames one by one as inspected towards the dummy board end and then put the dummy in the other end when finished. BTW I am trying out thin polycarbonate sheet covers similar to the paynes type, and it's a...

Swienty Poly Nationals - design change

I think it will be when they get propolised a bit because they will then be liable to go sideways as you push the frames back to get your dummy frame in at the end of the inspection. I felt it right to inform them so that they can take a look at it and in the future do something about it. 2mm...

How do you treat your gloves

Lakeland De Luxe Gloves 2.99 pair. Thin enough for good manipulation and thick enough to help protect from stings. They can sting through them if really determined but they usually don't get the stinger in too far as the material they are made tom is really tough.

Swienty Poly Nationals - design change

Have emailed Swienty re the overlapping frames problem , but not heard anything back yet. Estimated that they are 2mm out on each side which allows the frames to overlap as I noted earlier in the thread. Need to find a 2mm plastic or aluminium strip to fit on each of the side walls where the...

    Possible High Blood Pressure

From the NHS site Can eating too much black liquorice be bad for you? Yes, particularly if you’re 40 or older, eating 57g (2 ounces) of black liquorice a day for at least two weeks could give you an irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia). Black liquorice contains the compound glycyrrhizin, which...

    Possible High Blood Pressure

My wife had a period of time when she had high BP we believe caused by stress. GP was bit grouchy and suggested after the third visit she either "Go on medications for life or buy a BP measuring machine" We bought one of these, both of us use it regularly and her BP is quite normal now...

    Who's lost a swarm then...........

Maybe that there was a big increase in the population due to hatching brood after the swarm which would lead you to think not many bees left.

    Got one!

Probably some pheromone remaining on the bush which might be attractive to a new swarm. One experienced beek I know squishes any Queens he is replacing on a post near his apiary and has had several swarms settles there in the last few years, none of which appear to have come from his own hives.

At what point is using smoke helpful after installing a package of bees

I have taken to using minimal smoke into the top of the bb and wait a couple of minutes before opening up. I have found that they aren't as inclined to be congregated at the top of the frames as they were when I used to smoke the entrance.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

They're not happy that you ran off to have a torrid affair with their African cousins  They will eventually forgive you if you promise not to do it again :)

What did you do in the Apiary today?

One hive had two supers half full of brood Grrrr…. so much for a new QE that didn't work :( Couldn't find Q so have sectioned off every box with a QE and will look for her next week. One hive only covering half of the BB with brood and lots of space but eggs in cups! Broke them down and will...

Swienty Poly Nationals - design change

My bees must be less of the proppy kind of strain :) They do propolise the paynes sheets but not so that they are too difficult to remove. I'm going to replace them with thick polcarbonate sheet later.

Swienty Poly Nationals - design change

First new Swienty 14x12 BB deployed today as a solution to changing a hive over from a Commercial BB. Did not notice until I put it on that there is a big gap between the side wall and Hoffman frame lugs which allows them to overlap if one is pushed fully left and the adjacent frame fully right...

Swienty Poly Nationals - design change

AFAIK they are still selling the old roof. As swarm says, no glue required because the dovetails are an excellent fit.

    Storing supers and frames

Mould might be caused by wet supers fermenting in the sealed bag.

Swienty Poly Nationals - design change

I've have two small mods planned for mine so far... Gluing a little piece of wood to the underside of the Varroa tray as its just too shiny to grab when trying to get it out of the floor. Second, using a full size mouse guard from T's to blank off the entrance in Autumn. I do not like the...
