    Theft of hives

Bees won't be keen on the microwave radiation ;)

    P*ynes Feeder (National not Nuc)

To remove the dividers put some hot (not boiling) water in the feeder so that it works into the side slots. After a while place the fingers of both hands under the divider and gently press upwards. This worked for me on three feeders I have.

    P*ynes Feeder (National not Nuc)

Mk 1 and 2 are bee drowning devices, would not buy any more of them. Manufacturers should build prototypes and test them properly before selling them. As bee farmers I cannot understand why P's didn't notice the gap was massive and bees were drowning in the feeder. Last year I had many...

    Bee Stings

IMO stings are more painful and the venom more potent at this time of year. Maybe it's because the oldest bees with most venom are bored at home with the end of the recent flow :) My worst ever scenario occurred last week with a particularly aggressive hive which needs sorted out. I had 10...

Thymol for nosema: confusion re Sticky recipe

I used the second (emulsified) recipe last year with no ill effects and I am pretty sure I stuck to the 5 ml IPA. The IPA AFAIK is only added to liquify the thymol so I am assuming 5 ml should work. The most difficult bit was getting the Lectithin, ended up with a tin that will last until the...

    Bad Reaction To Sting

I reacted similarly when I received a horsefly bite but it didn't quite go black as yours has. Hope it clears up soon, perhaps try some honey on it to see if it accelerates the healing?

    Hive Robbing

Make the entrance only one beespace wide. Have a search on here for robbing as I recall there is something about putting a flat sheet of wood/glass in front of the entrance, confuses the wasps but the bees find there way in and out OK.

Opinions - best vehicle for Beeks?

Wow! Lots of suggestions so far - many thanks. Have been reading up on a few makes/models. Favourite so far is the Berlingo XTR+ with the improved drive for off road. That may change in another few minutes of browsing :). As for trailers I did buy a little 6x4 (Erde brand, hard suspension)...

Opinions - best vehicle for Beeks?

I'm looking for a new beekeeping vehicle, something that can be used just for that purpose and will not require constant cleaning before taking SWMBO out to town etc :) My hives are not far away from home (<5 miles) at an out apiary, and I have been considering everything from a Skoda Yeti to a...

    Preparing equipment for extraction

As a 3rd year beek I'm just about getting the extraction routine sorted now. Some things I found useful… As I extract in the kitchen I firstly put one of those cheap thin plastic decorating sheets from DIY shop down on the floor, followed by cardboard sheets. I wear a pair of flip flops when...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Well you can't blame her can you, would you like to live in a room smothered in Thymol for two weeks :) Apiguard always seems to make my colonies tetchy :(

Inkjets will produce labels that are pretty much waterproof if the ink is pigment as opposed to dye type ink.

    Poly Hive supers

I use both the Paynes and Swienty poly supers, both are good but I find the Swienty poly easier to handle. Domino, after trialling both Paynes 14x12 and Swienty the Swienty has come out tops for me as fas as quality of foam and compatibility with wooden parts are concerned. There have been...
