    When to put supers on?

Thanks to you & Steve for great advice which makes sense to me. I live in rural SW Ireland & belong to newly formed FIBKA branch.

    When to put supers on?

Am promised a new queen with 4 frames. Plan to add 2/3 frames with foundation and fill rest with dummy board. Want to go into Winter with a maximum strong colony so assume that I would have one super to keep either on top of brood or nadired. Correct if wrong as am a learner still to get 1st bees.

Thanks Guys, as an expectant beekeeper (non-overwintered Nuc expected) its good to have these reflections and to realise that things happen and not to beat ourselves up when it looks like our failure.

Will have only enough equipment for one colony with brood + 2 supers polly hives as start-up. Would not want to go beyond two colonies. Can I get away with one for the 1st year assuming all ok?

    Facing South?

Piggybacking onto this old thread for relevance: Am about to site the 1st of my hives in my rural 1/2 acre setting and would ask for advice: 1. Most sheltered site is facing South and behind a 25ft pollytunnel but not sure if that is an acceptable flight path? 2. open mown managed lawn windy...

Have a start-up kit: Maisemore brood + 2 supers with flexi-plastic "crown board" and included is a 4 pint feeder. Any ideas how/ where to install the feeder?

    Poly painting

I ended up getting a cheap end-of-line tin of Gloss and had a light green colouration added. After two coats, it looks very well sealed and with no obvious odour so think it should be ok.

    Poly painting

Excuse this question but am new here. There are some "advisers" who insist that paint for polly hives should be masonry paint, is that incorrect in your experience?
