What did you do in the Apiary today?

I still have supers on the strongest of mine and they're filling with balsam.I'd say around 50% of my crop this year has been collected since the beginning of September, sooo glad I decided to leave the supers on !

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I'm leaving one super on each until after the weekend then removing them all and treating. My varroa is low this year so happy to leave treatment late.

Two colonies on top of each other, with different entrances?

i've got 4 hives like this ,good for overwintering as the heat from the bottom hive warms the upper one, saves on kit and smaller footprint. It is a bit of a pain when you need to go into the bottom hive but it works for me.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Removed 12 supers from 4 hives still a very good balsam flow on. I used clearer boards with and eke underneath to speed it up, 3 are rhombus and 1 is porter. The 3 rhombus boards worked a treat, the one with porter escapes was a right mess with lots of angry sticky bees unable to get out. That's...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Yeah the wet July and August really helped, new plants are popping up all the time only about 10inch tall but still flowering well. I can honestly say this week has been one of the strongest flows i've ever seen.Looks like 3 more days then it's all over. I did a video on my Facebook showing the...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Vast majority is Balsam, small bits of Ivy and knotweed also. Love the balsam it's so so easy to process, flies out of the frames and through the filters, fully settled and ready to jar in under a day.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Went down to the out apiary to try and grab some honey off but somehow managed to forget my beesuit! :banghead: It didn't really matter too much as none was ready yet, there's lots of balsam nectar that needs drying out. Pretty pleased I could lift the crownboards and have a peep at all 12 hives...

    “Indian” Summer next week?

Agreed but personally I'm happy to leave the supers on a bit later this year as the varroa numbers in my hives are low for some reason this year.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Brief Inspection of 12 of mine tonight,LOTS of balsam coming in mostly back-filling the brood boxes but the supers are slowly filling too. All colonies queenright and well tempered, laying has slowed right down but still good amounts of sealed brood present. Forked out some drone brood and saw a...

    “Indian” Summer next week?

Just inspected all mine at the 'balsam' apiary, tons of nectar being stored in the brood boxes but not so much being put in the supers. Most of the supers' center 6 frames are pretty full but the outside frames are mostly empty. The best thing about the balsam is it keeps all the wasps...

    “Indian” Summer next week?

All my supers (60) are still on in hope of getting a late bonanza from the balsam in the next week and looking at all the heavy landings today it could pay off! I love it when the bees are so full of nectar they don't make it to the landing board and need to have a little rest on the ground...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Tried to move a poly nuc to another apiary, nice easy job you would think, but no it had a wasp nest attached under the mesh floor took 8 very painful stings despite having my Sherrif suit on. arrgh

    Low Varroa in ‘23

Same for me here, pretty much all my colonies have tried to swarm this year so have all had brood breaks and varroa levels seem much lower than usual which is great as i'm able to leave supers on later to hopefully grab some balsam honey.
