What did you do in the Apiary today?

Inspected 12 of mine today This apiary started off the year as 6 overwintered colonies that have now each been split. All the new queens are mated very well and laying at an epic rate the old queens are all still going pretty well too. No signs of any swarming so I think we should be good for the...

    new frames v old frames

I've not worked out the costs but have given up trying to recycle old frames, the effort and mess involved just isn't worth it for me.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Had a peep in some supers, there has been a fantastic bramble flow on here for the last 10 days and all colonies have filled between 1 and 3 supers and are starting to cap them.Weather looks a bit iffy for the next few days which should give me chance to extract and return some supers as all my...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Checked in a few supers ,the hives I looked at were running on fumes 10 days ago and now have all filled either 2 or 3 supers completely with nectar from the bramble which is now in full flower! Weather looks good this week and all my supers are in use so i'll be doing some more extracting very...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Inspected 10 of mine today, there is the very start of a flow coming on here which is a good job as a lot of them were pretty low on stores after the recent bad weather and June gap. 3 of my early splits are trying to swarm again (justifiably as they were rammed with brood and bees) I'm...

How long shall I give her?

How long shall I give her?

Did a Demaree on one of mine on 10th of April, they built a couple of supercedure cells and the queen below is knocking on a bit so I gave them a seperate entrance and let them raise a new Q with the intention of re-uniting and bumping off the old Q when the new Q was laying. Checked them on...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Inspected 10 of mine today last visit to this apiary was a bit of a mess with lots of swarming and Q- colonies waiting for matings, today all had laying queens and the newly mated queens have excellent laying patterns so well pleased with that. All the swarming seems to have stopped for the...

    Queen intro update

No I didn't but I will do next time!

    Queen intro update

I have always found it very difficult to successfully introduce new queens into aggressive hives,I had one that was really bad and moved it to the other side of the apiary to lose the fliers before trying to find the Q and the flying bees went into the hive next door and killed that Queen!

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Inspected 12 of mine today, haven't had chance to look in them for 12 days so didn't know what to expect. Hives were about the same weight or slightly lighter that last visit,so the June gap is in full force here and the bees weren't too happy. One of my very few colonies that hasn't tried to...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Removed and extracted the honey that was ready from the farm apiary (3 1/2 supers from 6 hives) lots of honey not quite ready for taking off yet but spring flow is definately slowing drastically now and weather looks pretty poor next week so i suspect not much more will be added for a good while...

"Swarmy" season - are we in for a second round?

I made a split 5 weeks ago ,the Q+ part has drawn out and laid up a 9 frames of a brood box of foundation and filled 2 supers. Today I found multiple swarm cells ! Destroyed all the cells and removed 2 deep frames of nectar and gave them empty combs as well as adding another super. So for me...
