    Caddon hives

Put them together yesterday and very impressed no knots in the wrong places, wood smooth as a babies bum! ha! Looks a lovely colour now I have treated with the clear cuprinol (although I know this isn't absolutely necessary). Go for it! Louise

    Caddon hives

The Thornes seconds were more expensive than the caddon I have just bought and the Caddon is much better quality and easy assembly. They even assembled the roof for me to pack the brood boxes into it. The roof is deeper than the Thornes ones too. So no argument for me, I will go back to...

    Caddon hives

Just put the Caddon brood boxes together, great and quick, lovely smooth wood and excellent value. Tried a plywood broodbox from fragile planet - terrible to put together, terrible design spent ages trying to ensure it function correctly, so won't be buying from them again.

    Caddon hives

Nothing to speak of. My previous purchases was of Thornes seconds and I was not impressed with them - notes in awkward places and also some mistakes that took a bit of tinkering and ingenious woodwork to solve!

    Caddon hives

I have just received my order for three national brood boxes and a national roof from the above and I am completely blown away by the excellent quality.:drool5: So if you are looking for any hive parts I would recommend them as their prices are hard to beat and the delivery was very quick...

    Drone Question

If you can get hold of a copy of Jurgen Tautz's 'The bees that buzz' it is fully explained in there! A queen can often return to the hive with one of the drone's bits still in place and her attendants remove it. What I found most interesting was the fact that there was no fighting and...

    Brother adams hive

Beecraft & hive manufacture I have just read my latest Beecraft and it states that some research has been done on the manufacture of hives and they will be giving us the low down on it in the next issue. Apparently some of the manufacture is very poor and taking no note of the beespace etc...

They have those in France too! The signs are also in French because their dogs can read them!

    Lawn treatments and the ingredients

We know our orchids are rare and we treasure them. We only discovered them after going on holiday one June years ago without mowing the lawn, imagine our surprise when we got back. We mow around each patch now and have watched them multiply over the years. Yet another reason for not putting...

    Is this safe to feed

Make your own, easy peasy. 2lb sugar and about 8ounces of boiling water. Dissolve, bring to boil, simmer for a few minutes, then plunge container into cold water, keep stirring. If you have glucose syrup (from sainsburys) add a tablespoonful this stops crystallisation, but if it is an...

    Lawn treatments and the ingredients

Hi Brosville Thanks for your comments. Just so you know my own garden has been completely pesticide free for the last twenty years and I get very upset when neighbours don't think about the consequences of their actions. Spoke to the neighbour yesterday and she said that she will continue to...

    Lawn treatments and the ingredients

I was contacted by my neighbour a few days ago, she was going to have a lawn treatment done and wanted to know when the best time was for the bees! Obviously it is cold at the moment, but they are flying at midday if the sun is out. She also told me that she had asked the company what was in...

    Compulsory registration?

In the days of high levels of theft with video players there used to be an invisible pen that you could put your postcode onto the item. If found by the police, or when a raid was in place, these items were easily identifiable with a special light. This could be useful on hives, or something...

    Smoker fuel

After trying various cardboards, loo roll holders etc. I have now discovered that shredded paper is good - all our personal info is shredded and now it is burned too!

    Woodpecker Armageddon

We have plenty of the green woodpeckers in our garden, but not one turned up this morning while I was doing the RSPB garden birdwatch - perhaps you have shot them all!! Seriously they have not bothered my hives (apparently it is learned behaviour) but my hives have wire netting round them. Louise
