    Local adaption

I've always wondered how to tell the difference in AMM and AMC. What things in terms of colouration do you look for? Is there any other tell tale signs without having to send them for testing?

    Importing queens post Brexit

I was actually thinking about this earlier as I was looking through customs formalities for work. Not sure how this is going to work for Northern Ireland as even importing from GB to NI is going to be a ballache, I reckon I'll need a health cert and I can't imagine many suppliers in the UK will...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

One last queen introduction of the season; arrived in the post this morning so nipped home, removed the virgin queen and added new queen in over some emerging brood. Never attempted one this late but fortunately the weather is nice today, will try and remove the cage on Sunday.

    Maisemore's autumn sales

They already helped empty my wallet in the last sale and Thornes wasn't that long ago either. Not the roof, they have the same internal dimensions as a wooden hive however externally they are 50cm opposed to the standard 46cm. You could use supers but you'll have large overhangs on the poly...

Alternative food sources and the effects they have on our bees.

Quick google would suggest pollen is actually ~22% protein, wonder how he got such a low figure for his study.

Alternative food sources and the effects they have on our bees.

As posted earlier in the thread by madasafish it would appear so: A Comparative Test Of The Pollen Subs (Part 1 & 2) - Scientific Beekeeping Also, the protein content at 20% doesn't appear to be an important factor, from the study Randy calculates natural pollen to be about 9.1% protein and it...

What's wrong with local bees? :)

Personally I buy in a fair few queens and have tried quite a few suppliers, part of the fun is comparing and contrasting the different strains. My preference is still for Buckfast but I'm trying to figure out what works best for me so I have introduced some recommended Carnica queens. In a few...

    Old Abelo hive ventilation holes

The only time you would need the ventilation that the five holes gives if you were to use it as a travel screen. I screwed three screws to secure them or on some I cut the edges off the disk and silicone them in permanently.

    Sourcing Oxalic Acid Crystals

When sublimating it does seem to have a detrimental effect, when damp the OA sticks to the caps and eventually seems to harden over so they need cleaned out. I left the OA nearby a dehumidifier and noticed a definite improvement on next usage..

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Fifth and final vape this evening, I ain't doing any more so I hope its enough. Released three of Ged Marshalls queens from their introduction cages. Checked a nuc that I hadn't checked since mid August as it didn't appear as active as others; found a new queen so marked her, her abdomen did...

    Steam wax melter?

Thrones easi-steam might be a good starting point for inspiration. Easi-steam (all hive types available except WBC) I had thought about purchasing one of their roofs (I think it was ~£17) in the sale along with a solid floor and brood box to attempt to make my own. The metal for the roof would...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Fourth vape carried out, was just starting to rain as I finished. Will monitor drop again and see what the boards show. Used a new batch of powder which seemed to work better, old batch is sitting nearby the dehumidifier to see if it dries out a bit.

    Inspiring made nuc for sale.

£30 for something that requires assembly and "waterproofing" when for less than £9 more (I think they are cheaper than £30 in the sales) you could have a Maisemore poly nuc with neither of the affermentioned problems, is much cosier for the bees and also includes a feeder.

    Let the bees tell you

The same thing happens in Abelo poly hives, this was capped with the poly disc and they still propolised it closed.

Recent beekeeping video I have my concerns.

I've seen the video in question but I think it had ten likes, unless it was shared elsewhere; but yes I immediately thought very poor practice. I don't think it's a case of being intimidating but rather poor judgment which in turn encourages new beeks to try the same practises; especially when...

    strange behaviour at entrance

From what I can make it looks like a drone; a lot of my hives evicted their drone population weeks ago.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Finished third round of treatment, plan to check the boards and see what the drop is the next few days and decide whether to go for a fourth. Also received some queens from British Honey Producers this morning, wasn't expecting them so quickly so didn't have time this evening to hive them.

    Oxalic Vaporiser

OA can cause serious eye damage, for the sake of a few quid to get adequate eye protection why would you even take the risk?
