What did you do in the Apiary today?

Finally a few hours without rain, I've now taken off all the treatment strips that have been on for 8 weeks.

    Planer thicknesser

I have a record planner thicknesses, I have had it for around 25 years, excellent little (10") machine. How ever I stopped making hives as its far cheaper to buy them in the sales. I've made loads, but by the time you travel to collect your Cedar, dry it, plane, thickness and cut it to size...

    Soft set/ creamed honey

My labels say 'Soft Set' Honey, a kind friend of mine has just 70lb of it for me, in his Abelo/Lyson post as f*** machine. It's all jarred and just going through its 'Setting' process, looks bloody lovely. Hope it sells!

    Seconds in the sales

I only ever buy seconds, nothing wrong with them, you might get a one or two bad frames in 100. Supers and BB's are just not worth making, I've been there, just not worth the effort, by the time you travel to but the cedar, diemention it then join it all. A super for £12.50 and a BB for £15.50 -...

    Cleaning wax making equipment

I've got all dedicated kit, a steam melter etc. But when I make lip balms to clean the pyrex jugs I use I pop them in the microwave with kitchen roll underneath and put them on full power for a minute and check, then wipe them with kitchen roll, s simple was in soapy water finishes the job.

    Heather dissapoints

I don't have to move my bees as the heather is less the ½ a mile away, I didn't get any in the hives at all. Very poor here in the Cynon Valley.

    Giving apiarys names.

I design the label and get them professionally printed, this can be on a variety of materials, depending what the client wants.

    Giving apiarys names.

I see so many badly design/worded labels, I design labels for bee keepers and try to include all the 'Legal' information, however some beekeepers just want what they want! Customer is always right.. There is NO legal requirement to put apiary names on labels. Here are my labels, branding sells...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Went up to feed a few Nucs and there was a small clump of bees in the roof of one, when I looked there was a queen there that I had marked a few days ago! Went to the Nuc she was in only to find that Wasps had attacked it. popped her into a tiny swarm I picked up on Wednesday, I removed the...

    Evaluation of Hives.

A local farmer's wife asked me about her keeping bees, the farm is only about 1/2 a mile from where I keep my bees. It's up on a side of a mountain about 230mts above sea level, I was wondering what sort of heights do other beekeepers keep their hives.

Methods & Acceptable levels of filtration ???

That's all I ever do, I leave it for at least 2 days in a heated settling/bottling tank, I remove the scum, then jar it.

    Electric extractor recommendation

I bought the Königin 8 frame tangential extractor, I'm really please with it, no more frame 'blow-outs', it runs so smooth. I can uncap 8 frames using the Abelo Steam knife system by the time its run through its 3 cycles. I love it - 16 hives to be reduce to 10 this winter! Hope this helps.

    Dealing with cappings

I don't have the 'Melifo Pro' but I do have the perforated tray on the uncapping table/tray I use, bought with the steam knife system. But yes I agree that moving the cappings around does help, I have today 'run-off' around 60lb of honey off the cappings from the tray. I uncapped 15 supers and...

    Dealing with cappings

I have the Abelo steam un-capping system, its really made un-capping so straight forward, however I am left with a load of cappings. How do other member deal with their cappings? Capping screws are so expensive. Share your methods please.

    Konigin

I've got their 8 frame tangential extractor, the build quality is excellent, I used it last season and was really impressed, set the program to run atomically and by time I extract 8 frames I can uncap 8 frames. No 'blowouts' on the frames due to the way it works.
