What did you do in the Apiary today?

Received my AI equipment on Thursday, finally got round to putting it together after giving it a clean, lubricated all the moving parts via the detailed instructions. It will be sterilised before use. Roll on the breeding season.

    Tools for a Newbee

One handed queen catcher and push in 'ring of thrones' (handy for holding the queen when found on a frame so you can inspect the rest of the hive).

    Pineboard/lamwood hives

Its not the 'spare time' its the cost of preparing the raw materials, the machines and electricity. Take it from me who has a well equipped workshop, its really not worth it. Buy Supers in the sales for £12.50 and Broad Boxes at £15.50 and spend the winter putting them together and treating...

    AI Training/Experience

The time has arrive to bite the bullet and to move to AI, is there anyone who is willing to share some of their experience with me. I have watched loads of You Tube video's on AI, found two excellent video's by Susan Cobey. I am very practically minded and was wondering is there anyone close to...

    Pineboard/lamwood hives

I used to make my own hives, but to be honest by the time I drove to get Cedar then planned and thicknesses it, its really not worth it. I now buy what I need in the sales.

    Selling honey through shops

I alway do the same as Poly Hive, I offer sale or return! I have never had any returned, in fact its hard to keep up with sales sometimes. Another selling point is label, as someone said to me a well designed and attractive label sells your honey, its the content on the jars that make them...

    Jar Filling Machines

You can program the machine into a not drip mode, when it fills the jars it reverses the motor to prevent drips, it never dripped for me when it was not in use, The mechanism for the jars was easy to use, adjusted it for my 12oz round jars and it worked like clockwork. Fast and very efficient.

    honey creamer

A friend has the heated Abelo Creamer, its a wonderful piece of kit, I have used it twice, it mixes for 15mins every hour for 4 days. Makes a really good job of creaming honey, expensive mind.

    Jar Filling Machines

No need with the non return valve - £35 extra, I've now ordered one, what I found if you keep running the filling it didn't need it, but when you stopped it to go and get more boxes of jars the honey run back slightly into the tank.

    Jar Filling Machines

I have the Swienty machine and you can get a non return valve for the input side, then the tank can be below. Creamed honey straight from the creamer is fine, its normally warm.

Warming honey that is jarred & labelled

I warm mine to 40C overnight, I always jar and label all my honey in two-three batches in the summer, then I warm 50-72 jars at a time. This works for me.

    Jar Filling Machines

I've just bought the Swienty Table Top Filling Station, I went for this because of its size, it holds 13 jars at a time but as fast as you can add more jars it fills them, its an amazing piece of equipment.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Lucky no damage to any hives, none blown over but 3 pieces of glass gone in the greenhouse, all replaced now.

    Consequences of Ciara

My Apiary escaped the storm, even though my greenhouse didn't, lucky really when I watch the news and also hear the sound of chainsaws around where I live.

    Honey Pump

Have any beekeepers here gone down the road of buying a pump for pumping honey? For example a Lowara, the dedicated ones from suppliers seem very expensive. I worked in a Micro Brewery and we used Lowara Pumps, excellent quality and pumped 'wort' from a copper at 110C, just needed to fit heat...

    Spacing in supers.

I always fit my supers with 10 frame castellations, I get these for Bee-Equipment they are excellent quality. I always just leave the bees draw them at this spacing but I will move them around in the super so they all get drawn, something I no longer do is mix drawn and un-drawn frames, the bees...
