I love frame feeders for feeding a swarm or a nuc, and they can be used as dummy boards at the same time.
You have to make sure the float is not propolised to the feeder, before filling the feeder.
Thanks Dani,
We've had a good heather honey harvest in the Conwy Valley this year, and we want to encourage more of our members to go for heather honey.
I recently replaced the 8ft fluorescent strip lights in my honey house with 6ft LED strip lights, and I've noticed that the lights no longer attract bees. It's a better light to work under and it saves energy. My local electrician replaced all four strip lights in a couple of hours.
We bought the all-stainless steel version @ £215 with free carriage and a free straining bag. It is now out on hire to a member. It is a solid piece of kit.
The picture shows a 454g honey jar on the table, to give an idea of the size of the press.
We've just ordered this press from Love Brewing, the mainly-stainless version @£216, including a straining cloth. We have plenty of heather honey this year in the Conwy Valley.
Thanks for the recommendation.
Has anyone here used the Thorn's stainless steel honey press for heather honey?
We are thinking of buying one to lend out to members. There's a fair harvest of heather honey here in North Wales.
We have one of the Economy presses, not so impressed with it.
Thanks.
Re my piece about Heather Beekeeping quoted here, I remove the honey supers at the heather, then fit the first Apiguard tray at the heather, then bring the hives home. Thymol is never in the hive when honey supers for harvesting are on the hive.
We walked past a row of mature Black Locust / False Acacia trees here in North Wales yesterday. It is said to flower in May/June (Kirk and Howes book).
Doers anyone have first hand experience of it as a honey producer in the UK? One for the June gap maybe?
I bought this Cordyline australis (I think) about 15 years ago at the Conwy Seed Fair. It's now about 3 metres high.
It has just produced this enormous flower head, which is covered with honey bees from 8am. The yard is filled with the aroma of the flowers.
What a wonderful surprise!

Honey buckets will need very careful packaging to avoid cracking the bucket, which may only become apparent when the bucket is warmed up to melt the honey.
I'm still using a 40-year old copy of Howes' Plants and Beekeeping, the most useful book in my collection of bee books. Worth seeking out at secondhand book shops.
AbeBooks sell print on demand copies at high prices.
