    Swarm Ownership law.

My case was pressed at the time, and it was clear we would not be making any progress. The guy was begged and implored repeatedly not to get involved, anyway, I have made my point I think. My point exactly, although I think some or all the loci and alleles involved have been identified and are...

    Are 14x12 brood boxes better?

I used to use 14x12 but found that colony splits and swarm prevention are a real pain unless you have 14x12 nucs and spares. Also, if you ever have to supply a friend with bees, chances are that friend will be starting up with standard equipment and so you will have to start cutting frames etc...

Are black bees OK in the burbs?

Here: HUNT, G. J. & PAGE-JR, R. E. 1995. Linkage map of the honey bee, Apis mellifera, based on RAPD markers. Genetics, 139, 1371-1382.

    Swarm Ownership law.

Keith, according to polyhive's book you are within you rights legally to claim bees that settle on your land. I would say I am pretty good with swarm control though. I very rarely lose swarms, and I didn't have any swarms issue last year because of control, can you say the same about your...

    OSR Pollen?

Yeah, I'd go with salix catkins too.

Are black bees OK in the burbs?

No. The Blk gene is recessive, which means a worker bee must have two copies of the allele to suppress the yellow colour completely. The dark colour allele is not dominant, and certainly not in all cases.

    Swarm Ownership law.

Thank you polyhive for that scan. Note though, that I have not called Eric a thief, although he may have committed theft in the eyes of the law given that my father persued the bees to the tree. Leaving one QC is a rather risky approach, but I have adopted that method, and indeed last year I...

    Swarm Ownership law.

That is incorrect. As stated I had been and was set to return. You didn't ask my father if he had seen the swarm issue which he had. And even if he hadn't, what you did was not very nice nor very fair. You were told whose they were repeatedly. And my point here is you were told prior to...

Are black bees OK in the burbs?

    >because in all case the dark colour gene is dominent. Keith, given how accusing, you were to me in another post, I should say "THAT IS RUBBISH"....etc. but I will desist. Body colour in the honey bee is actually rather complex. Whilst it may be true that yellow bees are homozygous recessives...

    North London theft

Given where he keeps his bees, I am pretty certain I am.

    North London theft

I have to say Eric, I hate thieving bee-keepers, but I find it rather hard to feel sympathy for you if as I suspect, you are the Eric mentioned in this thread: http://www.beekeepingforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=5458. Karma bites!!

swarm cells can't find unmarked queen

Relax and you will find her :)

New virgin Queens - how to treat the hive?

With queen introduction it is best to leave them alone for just over a week at least.
  14. J

    Quick question 2

If there is no queen I would either introduce a qcell from the AS broodbox if there are any spare. Or there is always the option to add a frame with some eggs.

    Last swarm of the season?

I have lost a huge swarm in September 3 years ago.

    Swarm Ownership law.

Well, they were nice and snug 10' up a tree. I don't think anyone can argue that they were a danger once they were up there. He just said "sorry, finders keepers, I was here first"

    Swarm Ownership law.

I read: "§ 68. Among wild animals (ferae naturae) a distinction is to be drawn. In those of them that are half tamed (mansuefactae), among which are mentioned deer, peacocks, pigeons, bees, property is not limited by strict detention, as in other wild animals, but by animus revertendi. A...

    Swarm Ownership law.

I had one of my colonies swarm yesterday. It settled on a tree on the street. My dad went out and notified a few of the neighbours close by that it was ours and that we would collect in a few hours time once we got our kit together and when the road was less busy. Instead someone called the...

    Queen Marking Fatality

I am amazed at how absolutely dead she looked, and yet she wasn't. She is alive and well.

    Supers full of Congealed Ivy

My bees come through the winter fine on Ivy, however I have quite a few supers full with left overs. What to do with them I do not know and storage till autumn would be a challenge. I do want to go on double brood this season, perhaps the bees would use Ivy as additional food to build wax?
