Humane Termination of Colony - How?

If you must, use diethyl ether aka Starter Fluid from Halfords and the likes, which will put them to sleep

    London main flow

In a normal year the main flow in London starts winding down around about now. Small leaf lime and perhaps Privet hedge, are some of what we get. I hope these are flowering late too, so that we get something to extract this year...

    Rooftop beekeeping

I have a couple of colonies on a home extension right above the back door of my parents' home. Some bees do occasionally come in at night attracted to the light but my dad wants the hives there. Interesting! I have had for 4 years year in year out, a significantly higher yield from those...

Angry Nasty Tetchy Aggresive Naggy Etc

I doubt that. Colony aggression is by all accounts negatively correlated to nectar flow. See here for example.

Warning, don't give a poor man land and bees!

‎"I do not think it is so certain or so safe a way of doing good, as by giving a poor man a stock of Bees, and then showing him how to take care of them, and to profit by them; for digging is thirsty work, and the beer-shop often stands hard by the allotment: so, although the labourer after his...

    Too many beekeepers in London??

:iagree: And, I think we know where the 31lbs figure comes from, here: https://secure.fera.defra.gov.uk/beebase/downloadDocument.cfm?id=582 which is the 2011 honey survey for the South East of England. There may or may not be too many hives in London, but until a year with weather comparable...

    Too many beekeepers in London??

http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/celebrity-beekeepers-told-to-buzz-off-7854420.html I don't know what to make of this article. I suspect however, that the figure of 31lbs is a complete farce. It is based upon the Regional bee inspector - Alan Byham's honey survey for 2011 which gives...

    Any London honey coming in?

I have had nothing worth taking off so far, and have been feeding where supplies were really low. Perhaps London really does have too many bees as that article in the standard claimed. NOT!!

    Divine providence ?

Lovely story! I had something similar. I bought a broken lawn mower for parts off of ebay last year, the seller had put the wrong postcode on the listing. I still went and drove the 30 mile drive. I got there and I notice quite a few bees looking at my car which always has that beek's whiff...

    CbeeWing Morphometry

hmm, thanks, I see your point, however it is possible that the population of a region is homogeneous. I have looked at wings from a few swarms and other hives within the North London region and all seem to fit in with > 50% similarity to carnica and not match at all for AMM. Which is why I ask...

    CbeeWing Morphometry

Does anyone use CbeeWing with wing parameters for more than just AMM and AM Carnica? According to Journal of Apicultural Research 50(1): 51-84 (2011) "In our opinion CBeeWing is not suitable for detection of hybridization in A. m. carnica populations". I wonder how useful it is as a tool in...

    Queen comes HOME

I had a pretty queen fly off today. She was a newly mated queen who had set up home in a small gap under the hive floor. I moved the floor and saw the queen. As I reached for my plunger marking cage, off she flew. I put the hive back without its floor propped up by a three sided eke. I hope she...

    Bees punished by drowning!

Make your own minds up.. http://www.miltonkeynes.co.uk/news/local/sting-operation-to-get-rid-of-bees-1-3901272 A DOCTOR who is an amateur beekeeper has come under stinging criticism for ‘murdering’ thousands of bees in the canal. Bletchley GP Dr Omar Abdalwhab was seen throwing his hive and...

    hives three floors up

Go for it! I have a single colony up on a roof, it gets really hot under the bee suit, the neighbours can watch me at work from a distance, and it can be quite windy. Removing heavy supers from up there is never fun, but still, not bad at all if it is just one or two colonies.

Being overwhelmed by my bees / feeling despondent - advice please

Yeah I think you should. You have no problem, you are doing just fine. There is nothing you can do about the weather keeping the bees at home with nothing to store in the supers just yet. Although you can A/S them and handling them would be more pleasurable, I would desist.
