    Formic acid, experiences of Canada

Finman. This is an excellent article on a method I am interested in but have not yet used. Does anyone else use this method and what experience did you have? I have heard stories of high queen losses. Thymol is ok but takes a long time, colonies are reluctant to take on winter stores and the...

    Do you move your hives?

Move my bees to OSR then if possible straight onto beens and later on to the heather. I started going to the heather simply to extend the season. If I could find perminant apiary sites, I think my back would prefer that just now.

    Hand fertilisation of bee eggs.

What's the reason for diluting the semen with buffer solution? Is it just to make it go farther or easier to use. Do AI practitioners dilute drone semen?

    imperial threads

Hi Pete, Don’t worry. ¼ Whit and ¼ UNC (not UNF) are interchangeable. As you’ve said the only difference is the thread angle of 55 and 60 deg and the tpi is the same. So one will fit the other. www.tracytools.com Try looking on this web site. They’re good suppliers who have served me well...

skep bee keeping (german videos from '78-'79)

Marvellous! What a lot of work involved for not a lot of honey. I wonder if skep bee keeping is still practiced on such a large scale. Thank you for posting the links.

    tweeking cell raisers

What an excellent thread. Good advice and didn’t reduce into a slanging match. Some things are different in USA, grafting in February for instance. One thing I don’t understand is a “poop-out”. Is it dysentery?

Will this reduce my BBKA module exams to junk status?

    Tool Sharpening

Hi nonstandard. I have an oilstone that has an uneven surface. To follow your above comment, all I need do to restore it is use wet & dry on a flat surface?

    Anyone grafted yet?

With all these queens emerging, Hivemaker, do you use mini nucs or standard frame nucs? Also do you introduce queen cells or virgins?

    pollen patties

Brewer’s yeast only seems to come in small homebrew sachets. Is there a source of larger quantities or can baker’s yeast be used?

Who Killed the Honey Bee? BBC 4 Tonight 21:00 15/02/11

Didn't see the prog at this showing but is this the one where the bee farmers are sprinkling a white powder in the hives? Is this anti biotic?

    Drone congregation area's.

This is excellent information. I’ve wandered around the surrounding fields listening for a DCA but have never located one. Looking at the timings though I’ve probably being too early. Three things I’ve come to appreciate much more in bee keeping are pollen, winter bees and drones. I have...
