What did you do in the Apiary today?

Looking at the forecast this might be an excellent weekend to treat so going to do so. We've had several weeks of cold weather now and this weekend is giving a forecast of 13 so the cluster should be loose and all before winter solstice.

    Perspex / Polycarbonate Crown Boards

Wool is actually a very undervalued resource; I can remember reading an article a good while ago about how warehouses were "rammed" full of it and the fleeces were worth a pittance. Just checking and it seems that it's still the case Prices for wool 'have gone through the floor' 215kg of wool...

Queen excluders not up to the job!

No, not noticed any warping. Used with Abelo poly boxes if that has any impact. Only done one season so far so maybe too early to tell.

Queen excluders not up to the job!

In the sales last year I bought a couple of Thornes plastic plus queen excluders which I was impressed with this season. They don't get stuck down as much as the wooden ones and they seem to lift up nicely rather than flick up like the wooden ones do sometimes. Early days yet but I purchased...

    14x12 Plastic Foundation

Something to think about if you were to go that route is to maybe consider adding in a few of the standard national sheets and that would give them space at the bottom of the frames to draw some drone comb.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I was going to stick it in the warming cabinet and see what it does; if I'm beat I'll get the heather press out and crush it. Already cleaned it though...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Removed 3 supers from the hives, two are quite heavy with lovely ivy honey. Its crystalised already though but some is capped. Jarred 213 jars with my new jarring machine, a real delight. Got about a third of them labelled. Topped up feed on a few nucs and hives.

    Intriguing products?

Similar to how you would do it with the push in cage. Find a frame with emerging brood and some stores; shake every bee off and put the queen in. With that Abelo cage it has the added benefit in that it doesn't damage brood and the queen can begin to lay up a larger area of the frame if space...

    Which budget wood hive

N.B. Insulation is beneficial in the heat as well as the cold. Bee equipment's sale started this morning, they have WRC parts which looks to be reasonable prices however they dont seem to have WRC floors or roofs but instead you could maybe buy a pine floor and an original style Abelo poly roof.

When I used to use the pan type I got a soldering mat and placed it over the a ply insert, no problems resting the pan upon it.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Had a former strong colony being robbed as well, lots of wax in front of the underfloor entrance and when I removed the frames the wax was flaky. Dummied it down and removed five frames, queen was present but little in the way of stores so fed this evening and will continue to. All the other...

    Cheap Egg Incubator

Reviews don't look great. My advice is to check eBay, Facebook marketplace etc for a second-hand Brinsea incubator.

    Jar Filling Machines

That's quite interesting; I had written the Thornes option off as I had seen no reviews or feedback however the price is very appealing. How many jars can you do in an hour? How long does it take to set up and clean up afterward?
