    What size Burco?

20 ltr does the job but , yes you will have to turn them . Of more importance is getting a stainless steel version and not an ally bodied one . Stamped round the top of mine it says 'Use no soda' which is a bu**er . To prove me wrong and the makers right I ignored it and boiled up lots of...

    pallets for hive stand

If you have access to building blocks I would stick with those . Pallets look a bit grotty and after a couple of yrs replacements are needed as they tend to rot quickly . G

    Mice

Sounds grim , and no real suggestions other than trapping and baiting . As long as the bait is in an approved bait box it shouldnt affect non target species . I would steer you away from any of the non lethal / humane deterrants, high pitched squealers etc. They dont work . G

    Cleaning up old hives

I agree Rolande , but only if you are sure its good kit . If the op has used frames of unknown provenance you have to scorch each frame to ensure they are clean enough to use with transferring infection . Too much trouble imho but the choice is yours/theirs . I stick with my original suggestion...

Wait ill they are flying next and swap them over . Some open them to apply oxalic in the freezing cold so in comparison not really a huge problem . G

    Cleaning up old hives

I would not bother with the frames if they are of unknown origin and have been used . Scorch , as above but if they are Cedar hives dont paint the outside , unless its a wbc of course . G

    Dead bees

Chris , The weathers been pretty rough here for some time so a build up of dead bees is possible , just the first opportunity for them to be cleared . Farbee . Try to relax , which i know is hard , but you cant do much with it now this late in the yr anyway . G

What are you reading this winter?

Madasafish . 50 shades of gray? Dont bother . My Mrs reckons its frightful tosh, at best ! I am re reading R.O.B Manley . Honey Farming , for the third time . Also dipping in and out of The World History of Beekeeping and Honey hunting by Eva Crane . Bit of a weighty tome but v interesting . G

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Minus 2 yesterday morning , lifted lid and through the clear cover could see bees clustered for the first time this Autumn . Mouseguards fitted to all hives on two sites in fields , two more apiaries to fit them to today . G

Am figuring that in New York national hives would be a bit thin on the ground . Langstroth or Dadants are the way to go .

    Inherited Bees

Mattk , you need to narrow down your location a little more . Bucks is the tallest of English counties so not much point me offering help if you are in MK and I am at the bottom end . G

    Badger Cull

Pete I will root round for the numbers but deer are being controlled to the tune of hundreds of thousands per yr . The estate I help out on which is 10,000 ha is taking 50 Red , 150 roe and Muntjac are shot on sight each yr . Scotland is even harder on the hill deer . G

    Badger Cull

Would this be the same Brian May who visited a primary school recently explaining to the kids that the reason they went home with fox poop all over uniforms and shoes was because they werent being careful enough with litter round the school ! Sorry , along with too many " celebs" Mr May is...
