    Bulk Inverted Syrup Wanted

Good luck Keith . My colleague went direct to Apisuc , not through a middle man in the Uk . Cuts another person out of the 'profit' loop . Also as you are paying in Euros from Ireland the price can be fixed and you are not at the mercy of the exchange rate . Something else to bear in mind , the...

    Bulk Inverted Syrup Wanted

Google Apisuc or Belgosuc . Lots of points of contact there . My only suggestion would be to weigh it out as it comes out of the tank into ibc's or whatever bulk tanks you are going to use . We borrowed a Manitou loader with in built scales and came up nearly a tonne short on a 6 tonne load ...

Bee-Keeping Protective Suit - your recommendations appreciated

Lots to choose from and no doubt lots of suggestions to come . Sherriff suits are well made and will last an age , they are a bit heavy for my taste so i went for a BB Wear all in one . This one is in its 8th season and gets worn for 2 solid days , and sometimes more a week during the Summer...

Beekeeper Attitude Survey - grateful for your input

I had a long term interest in beekeeping before taking it up . It was a polar opposite from my previous hobby of 20 odd yrs co driving rally cars . I fancied a change of pace obviously ! G

Made a simple NUC box but need some advice

I used to make mine with an entrance hole part way up as you describe but have changed to a slot at floor level . This gives the bees a chance to clean house , I found a circular hole above the floor line left a lot of debris , cappings , dead bees etc on the floor which then festered and...

    why the need for these

It only needs one loon to anchor up in front of you and the brood box to slide a little and you could have a very exciting drive on your hands . Perhaps I should have written that first post better ! Wear your suit but with the veil down , if the need arises you can slip it on . G

    why the need for these

And if you decide to move them in a car or van even though you have blocked them in , wear your suit ! Nothing worse than having an escapee or two whizzing round the cab . G

Which shallow frames for a national?

Itma , I agree to a certain point . I use 5s on brood frames and sn1s in the supers . But 16p a frame extra when i have 100 supers to fill is too much . But on a small scale I like the idea of having a single type of top bar . As you say it saves confusion mixing things up . G

Which shallow frames for a national?

Itma , why would you go to the cost and trouble of sn5s ? 4s are the same central spacing as 5s but the 5s have a wider top bar . sn4s over either dn4 or 5s shouldnt make any difference should it ? Or have I missed something earlier in the thread . G

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Not wholly unusual, some colonies will put up with a few drones during the Winter . Or , the worst case scenario is the queen is a drone layer. Lets hope not . G

Do you thank the land owner?

One jar of honey per hive on his ground . Frankly its a very small price to pay . Be generous folks ! G

    Storing Supers

And find a way of feeding the stores back to them next Spring . You dont want to harvest sugar syrup next year and call it honey . G

What month are bees home free?

For me its when I go in on the first inspection and find a healthy brood pattern and expanding colony . Before that , impossible to tell . G

What did you do in the Apiary today?

    Chicken virgin

Handle them from an early age so they are used to it . Makes life a lot easier if you need to catch them up in a hurry . Dont offer an alternative to their roosting box . My Banatms found a handy perch in the garden and roost out there regardless of the weather . Came out last Winter on frosty...

Have you lost any colonies to pesticides in the last 3 years?

Silly or not it is the right of the individual to maintain his/her anonymity . Please re read your post at 1.46pm . The reason you are able to post here is because of censorship on the other forum . Dont make the same mistake here , your writings are interesting but stick to bees and related...

    Painting hives

Blacks fine , blends into the background better than you think , especially if security is an issue . Raised temps in the hive not a problem. G
