    Plastic Beehives

    I use wood and poly gradually changing over to more poly but it would be a big expense to do it in one go and I dont want to throw away good wooden kit.

    Checked my hives yesterday never known a year when the hives are so full of bees , Still taking down invert and bringing in ivy pollen.First sign of one or two wasps around the hives this year but they seem to be very small.

    No traps this year havent seen many wasps they dont even seem to be on the windfall apples.

    Stand height

    Always make mine a bit higher so that I can trim the legs when they go rotten at the bottom.Another factor to consider is if the stand is too high there is more chance of it blowing over if its stormy.I never go more than two supers before extracting my back can cope with the effort.

    Remember years ago whilst staying in Ukraine one of the neigbours house caught fire.They had been making Samohonka and the fumes ignited in the roof .They had been sampling the product and fell asleep the whole village turned out to help put the fire out.

    If you unite hives do you ever end up with 2 laying queens?

    I,m reducing from five hives to three ,always thought that you had to dispatch one queen but this makes it a lot easier.

    Checked my hives yeaterday stores on two very low so had to feed.Hopefully the weather will now start to pick up and the ivy comes into flower.Debating if now would be the best time to merge some of the hives I want to be down from five to three by winter.

    Extracted a couple of supers yesterday .Pleased to see that the blank foundation I'd made recently is being drawn, an easy method I found on line. Will be making some more sheets when I have time.

    Once went with my father in law to help with a welding job in a local slaughterhouse, I couldnt understand why there was a room with coat hooks until they started slaughtering the cows .It was where the entrails were hung.
