What's flowering as forage in your area

I have 1 dandelion blooming. That's it unless you count the chicken feed that the bees love.

    Neighbours are so lovely

Neighbors! Glad my nearest one is 1.5 miles away.

God I love growing our own

My outside tomatoes were pretty much a failure last year EXCEPT Black Beauties which were late ripening but prolific and delicious. I live in the USA so your results may differ. Back on the subject of passion fruit: I may try it in my greenhouse. Last year I grew Jelly Melons (kiwano) in my...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Don't worry . God is in charge of the planet. All is going according to his plan.

God I love growing our own

If you want luffa seeds from the US I have hundreds of them. Fresh from last years crop.

God I love growing our own

I grow luffas but I have to grow them in pots in the greenhouse. Speaking of which, our part of the US missed the worst of the winter storms only to be hit a few days later with 55 mph winds. Our unheated greenhouse remained standing but damaged. I didn't have any crops growing but had just...

    Mildew/mould

I agree about having the jitters! This is my first year with bees and I have the Paradise poly hives. And it is recommended that you leave the screened bottom open, a reduced entrance and no other ventilation. Sounds counter intuitive but I'm doing it. So far so good although I admit when we had...

    Snow in the USA

I read that there are 1.8 million people without power due to the storm. My prayers go out to them. I'm glad we are Off Grid with solar panels and have a nice wood stove.

    Snow in the USA

We went from 60 F done to .3F in just a few hours on Thursday, high yesterday was 23F. But we were just on the edge of the storm and fortunately no wind or moisture. Got an email from someone who said one of their chickens was frozen to the ground! Bees are just starting to fly as it is 47F and...

    Sunrise today

Actually, I think our Persephone period is only 3 weeks long. Which is pretty nice. Too bad our Frost Free time is only 4 1/2 months long.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Beautiful sunny day, almost 58 F degrees . (14 C?) Took a peek in my 4 hives and gave each a small grease patty. Wind chill Tomorrow night expected to be 3 F degrees with wind gusts to 26 mph. Brr! I'll drape towels or blankets to block some of the wind. I have polystyrene hives so the bees...

    Sunrise today

This morning I was trying to find out when the Persephone period ended here (the time when we have less than 10 hours of daylight). The 'official' weather sites say it won't be until mid-middle January but our home weather station says our sunrise today was 7:01 and sunset 17:00 , 9 hours and 59...

    Bee Loss in USA

I just watched this interesting video about bee loss during Hurricane Ian.

    Paint colour on hives

I've read that bees like blue green in purple best . That's the color of flowers they are most attracted to. Supposedly they see 'Red' as black. And yes, it's a good idea to camouflage your hives if your bee yard is not where you can watch them. I don't have that problem. Here's one of mine:

Be glad when Christmas is over.

What? You're suppose to take your Christmas lights down?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Treated two hives with OA using a homemade vaporizer yesterday. I'll check the sticky boards today to see what kind of mite drop I have. If all went well I'll treat my other 2 hives tomorrow.

    Newby saying hi

My "bee suit" consists of a long sleeve shirt with a belt around it, a cheap hat with mosquito netting, and Platex gloves. I don't really like wearing gloves but I have one colony that is particularly fond of stinging my hands.

    Storing undrawn supers

Ericbeaumont I know BT kills caterpillars, larva etc and it doesn't hurt bees BUT I thought it could kill bee larva and bees could carry it into the hives from the garden so you should use with caution. I don't know if you use it on/around stored hives how long it stays "active". Any thoughts or...

    Storing undrawn supers

Plastic bags to insure against moths and then in a shed. And mouse traps around.
