    5 Frame Nuc

Yet another question I,am afraid. Nuc will arrive this evening and weather for next few days is much cooler and wet. So as I will have an empty super on top of the brood box is it worth putting some insulation in,just for a few days. Just trying to make sure I get everything ready and correct.

    5 Frame Nuc

Once again thanks for your replies. If I do have to feed would I be better using a frame feeder rather than a top feeder.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

What height have you put your bait hives? I was told to put them about 3 mtrs high, but of the dozen or so swarms I have collected over the years only one has been above 8'.

    5 Frame Nuc

I've just ordered a 5 frame nuc of local bees which should arrive early May. This is the first nuc I have ordered so not quite sure how to treat them when they arrive.I have a spare stand, floor, brood box,etc ready to house them in.Not too sure what they will arrive in. So my plan is to put the...

Bees from Dadant frames to Langstroth

I need to purchase some local bees and have found a local supplier, but the nuc will be on Dadant brood frames (435 x 300) and I have Langstroth frames (448 x 232). So what is the easiest way to move bees and brood onto my frames. I could modify a Langstroth brood box to take the 6 Dadant frames...

    Hive on a roof

Thanks for the list Dusty.Their is a proper staircase to the roof( well more of a terrace really, so ok for walking on.The builing is pretty much empty except for some old equipment so easy for carrying kit up and down, albeit a bit of a trex. As a roof terrace it does have a structure on it were...

    Hive on a roof

Thanks busybee53, I've now had a look at some of the threads.I have easy access via stairs and a door. Its a terrace rather than a roof so ok for walking around and it does have a low wall all the way around.I can park in the mill and have my own key for access. All looking good, I plan to move...

    Hive on a roof

I've been offered the chance to put a hive on the roof of an old flour mill in the centre of Fecamp. The building is very high, 5 storeys, with a large flat terrace. All adjacent properties are well below this level. Their is a nice sheltered corner where I can put the hive and only the owners...

    Isolated Situation

No Trees or hedgerows between fields or along roadsides anywhere is this region. Its been like that as long as I can remember. Seems to be the case in most of France.Farms seem to be smaller with lots of smallish fields, so may be to much work with lots of hedges. I'll ask our local farmer when...

    Isolated Situation

Thanks for replies. In Normandie we don't have hedgerows so no help their. Pretty much the conclusion I had come to. I'am of course feeding them at the moment, but I guess next year reduce to 2 colonies here and move over hives to friends gardens.

    Isolated Situation

I'am just coming to the end of my first year with my bees in Normandie. We live in an old farmhouse with a one acre plus garden full of flowers, bushes and trees. We are surrounded by fields which this year have mostly contained potatoes, sugar beet and flax. I have 4 hives and the bees have...

    Uniting Colonies

I've been reading Dave Cushman lately and on uniting colonies he states it is prudent to leave both queens rather than killing the least desirable. His argument is that the bees can make a better choice on which queen to keep. My concern would be that you could end up with one dead queen and one...

I have several bumble bees nests, one in my log pile, another under my shed. Never any trouble and always a pleasure to watch them at work.

    Treatment for stings

Thanks for replies. Can't give up I'am afraid, I'am addicted. I have a very good suit, but didn't have it on when I last got stung. Was watching bees from, what I thought was a safe distance, as I had done numerous times before. Had been out for a run so may be they didn't like sweaty odour...

    Treatment for stings

I react very badly to being stung, some dizziness and nausea. I swell up like a balloon within one hour. Dizziness and nausea lasts about 4 hours and swelling about 48hrs. I've been checked out by a doctor and told its because I'am too sensitive. I have been prescribed 10mg Laratadine tablets...

    Angry car owner encounter

Until I had my bees in my own garden I didn't realise how much poo ends up on your car. Rain doesn't wash it of, but a quick wash gets rid of it.We don't have any neighbours, but I agree with OBEE1,you don't want to fall out with neighbours if at all avoidable. If he does try to take it further...
