    Overwintering question

I have only had brood in the nadired super twice in 10 years. I think the queen stays up because it is warmer, but that is only my thoughts. The two times I've had brood in the super wasn’t a lack of space in the brood box, she’d done a lovely egg shaped brood patch covering both boxes.

    Overwintering question

I disagree with this. I keep mine on 14x12s. I was also told they don’t need a super on over winter. SOME 14x12s may not need a super, but if you have a large colony there is not enough room for them to have enough winter stores In the brood box. I leave a super on over winter and I put it...

    Getting creative with wax!

I saw that one as well. I spoke to someone who’d made one. Fill a ballon with water to the size you want, and dip it into melted wax several times. Stick the flowers on with blobs of wax and dip into the wax again to fix them permanently. Burst the balloon when finished. rub The base on a hot...

Where do you get 8mm strips of wood?

If you are fortunate enough to remove a lathe and plaster wall, the lathes are bee space, or mine are. I acquired a stash of them. They do need cleaning but work very well.

    Best ventilated bee suit?

What's the sizing like? I'm tall, and the bbwear large is ok everywhere except sleeve length.

What's flowering as forage in your area

The phone isn’t saying it needs updating, and I thought the picture was a nice clear one. I’ll try taking it again!

Mine doesn’t. You’ve got stars by your i, I don’t have. Mine just gives me the time, date and location of the plant. Shame, it would have been useful.

Is there anything a hobbyist beekeeper can do about swarms?

I did wise up. This was my first colony when I started beekeeping. Long time ago now, and was a swarm we’d been given. The next two colonies I acquired showed me what bees normally do when swarming!

Is there anything a hobbyist beekeeper can do about swarms?

I had a colony that would swarm about three times each summer. As soon as the new queen was laying well they would raise swarm cells. I got wise to it from the second year on, and killed the queen each time, left one queen cell, until they settled down each year. They were definitely swarm cells...

    suggestions before petrol!

I’ve had to deal with bees like these. The above advice, and get someone to help you move the boxes around and look for the queen. You could always try sieving for her after moving the brood box away if necessary. I am much braver when I have a friend helping me!
