    Asian Hornets

Not a typo, I’ve also heard the same as Tony says. It’s just not being publicised.

    Asian Hornets

I think the bigger problem is going to be out apiaries, when you only go there once a week. Once the AH gets settled here, that’s more than long enough to wipe out an apiary. I’m planning on moving at least two colonies back to my garden, so at least I can see what is happening On a daily basis...

    Asian Hornets...

Why do you think that? It lives in a climate that has wide temperature differences. I can’t see why it can’t survive as well here as it does in France - it’s not meant to be a confrontational answer, I’m curious.

    Another Somerset Newby!

So did the Central team not suggest a mentor? Have you joined that division? Are they not having any meetings that you can go to and find a mentor? They are a friendly group, no, I’m not in it, but a neighbouring one.

    Hello from Somerset

And I’m in the hills by Cheddar - so we have a lot of experience between us of different areas!

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Checked all colonies yesterday, and was surprised at how much stores were left, I was expecting them to have eaten a lot more considering the rain we’ve had and the size of the colonies, there must have been more opportunities to fly than I realised! Also I do have two new queens, just hope...

    BBKA Basic exam

There isn’t, but if, when assessing, they are crushing bees, or likely to break the ends off the frame, (mine are seconds and sometimes have a knot in the wrong place), I do show them other ways of using it. But there is no WRONG way as such.

    Preparing for winter

I know everyone says 14x12 is big enough for the bees and stores over winter, but I find with a big colony they don’t have the room to store all they need overwinter, and I always leave a super on, but nadir it, put it under the brood box, and find by the next spring the super is empty with very...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Inspect in the shed, and have a slightly open window for them to get out. lyes, an entrance through the wall. It was seeing the old Bee sheds that gave me the idea.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

More so I don’t have flying bees around when inspecting. The neighbours aren’t too keen on flying bees, but like the extra pollination in the veg garden!

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I am wondering if I make the opportunity to have a hive, or two, back in my garden, but in my shed. But, it does get warm in there, and I’m wondering if anyone has any idea of how warm is too warm to keep a hive indoors? I know it’s warm across Europe atm, I don’t think my shed gets above 40, so...

    Wasp nest

I have a wasps nest in the roof of the hive I use to store spare kit and my hive tools in. I can’t leave it there, and at the moment I’ve put it in the freezer, and have just turned it on, but would you relocate it? I’m tempted to put it in my garden, still in the roof, but I have small children...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I decided I needed to check on my amalgamations, I knew one had too much space and would be drawing comb where I didn't want it. So got both those sorted, and down to one brood box each. I have an old hive I keep my washing soda, tools and some spare kit in. Took the roof off when I got there...
