    Harvesting uncapped honey

Hi I have a super of uncapped and drippy honey. I want to make mead but don’t have an extractor. I would rather not destroy the comb- most of it is foundationless and I want to use it next year. Do you think I could wash the honey out by soaking the combs in warm water?

    Compressing large hive for winter

I am a bit confused about this 15c outside temp. Surely it is only the temp inside the hive that matters. And that stays a lot warmer than 15c

    Honey Tasting

Is there any classes/courses on honey tasting. My daughter and I are enjoying tasting all the complexity of our own honey but feel somewhat lacking in describing it. I don’t want to end up like a honey eating Julie Goodyear but would like to know what I am looking for and able to describe it

    Suggestions for research

Shows it was a good idea. When I used to supervise projects (electronics) I used to decide what piece of equipment that I would like to play with and design the project around that.

Measure thermal efficiency cedar vs poly hives. Then measure the amount of energy required to regulate temp in uninsulated cedar hive vs insulated.

    Mating flight?

As a hobbyist with hives in the garden I am frequently accused by my daughters of ‘weirdly just standing staring at his bees for hours’. But they don’t know what I’m thinking!!!

    Mating flight?

I know and I have read other experienced beekeepers who say the same. But the timing of when I was expecting the new queen to emerge was spot on. And I saw them from start to finish each time. It only lasts 20 mins or so

    Mating flight?

This year I had 4 mating flights from the same hive over 6 days. Thought the first was a swarm and collected but it didn’t behave like a swarm. Sure enough most bees went back to original hive. The next three left the hive, congregated a few meters away then all came back within half an hour...

    Closing hives

Yes we called it chicken. I remember when I was around six making a fire and setting my mums hedge on fire. When me and my brothers went into the kitchen for a third glass of water she twigged

    Closing hives

Thanks so much this forum is so good for me. Even if I don’t agree with everyone it gives me time to think and come to a sensible decision

    Closing hives

Yes is party guest. But had chat with neighbours (who have always been lovely and like the bees). So not going to lock them in. It was just that for four days there has been mating flights that landed in the neighbours garden - then returned to the hive- so loads of activity.

    Closing hives

Due to circumstances beyond my control (party in garden next door with one child severely allergic to bee stings) I am going to shut my bees in. As luck would have it it will be glorious weather all day (23 degrees). The hives have mesh floors. I am going to use mouse excluders with some mesh...

    Mating or failed swarm

Shouldn’t be,I left only one ((although you never know). Just like yesterday they have started fanning and are all returning to the hive- quite exciting. But as they keep going to the neighbours garden I hope there aren’t any more flights

    Mating or failed swarm

Hi All I had a new hatched queen in a hive that I was expecting to do a mating flight on Tuesday/Wed. But instead there was (what I thought was) a swarm. They were easy to put in a nuc although they were not as docile as other swarms I have retrieved. I noticed they hadn’t depleted the honey...
