Blinkin' bees won't cap the last two supers so that I can feed them...

Yes, they really do seem to have taken their time with capping this lot. I was wondering if it were to do with the supersedure. When the new queen hatched, and flew to mate, it was getting towards the end of the season and very little new brood coming through...

Blinkin' bees won't cap the last two supers so that I can feed them...

Thanks for the suggestions. I think it probably is ready and that the bees were waiting 'til the cells were filled up before sealing. I was just seeking some reassurance! There is very little that is sealed... that was my concern. The last super I took off was probably only about 75% capped...

Rendering beeswax.....what really is the best way for large amounts?

This is what I do. But with a smaller barrel. It works well.

    Wont take feed!

I've had problems with crystalising sugare stopping the bees taking feed too. The feeder access is a central "tower" in the middle of the box with a plastic bowl over the top and bought from a high-profile Lincolnshire-based beekeeping supplier. It works well in general but the sugar crytalises...

Blinkin' bees won't cap the last two supers so that I can feed them...

One of my colonies still hasn’t capped all its honey. Is there anything that I can do to encourage them to “finish it off” so that I can remove the supers and start feeding? The last 2 supers are pure summer honey, no rape, and will be good quality if previous years are anything to go by. The...

Bees in a chimney Leicestershire LE9 - Can anyone on here take them away?

I have had a call about a colony of bees that have set up home in a chimney in LE9 Leicestershire. Is there anyone on here who is interested in trying to get them out? The lady seems ok with them there and has sealed up the open chimney in the room at the bottom to stop the bees coming in the...

    Wasps going into the hive

Im afraid to say that there has been nothing so laid back as you about my approach to wasps this summer! I have been far less "zen" and far more "dalek" in my dealings with them ;)

    Wasps going into the hive

Yes I saw the same too... the moment the crown board came off a few were diving in. i think that they were reluctant for the fight at the hive entrance. saw lots of bar brawling at the entrance too. yes, they can be resistant little beggars!! I have had requests from a couple of householers...

I think that I have observed the mass ejection of drones

I am going to take my camera tomorrow. Will see if I can get some pics.

I think that I have observed the mass ejection of drones

I was at the apiary this evening and looking at the front of one of the colonies, I thought that it was under attack as there were lots of bees on the front, but when I got up close I realised that they were all drones, and they appeared to be trying to get back in to the hive. The odd worker...

    Wasps going into the hive

I noticed wasps around one of my hives today as well. The entrance blocks have been in for a week or so now and I hoped that all would be well. They seem to be hanging around what I consider to be the strongest colony out of the three in the apiary. More worryingly though was that the guard...

    AFB found in Leicestershire

I am south of the city - LE8 Countesthorpe. I've only been keeping for 3 or so years and the is the first time AFB has occurred so close. I have been keeping an eye on them and so far no sign of it...

Still time to raise a new queen?

I hope that there is still time for a new queen to get going. My favourite queen has been superseded (or died). About 10 days ago the cup was sealed - the colony is very powerful so I don't think that they will dwindle too badly.

The queen has got into the blinkin' super :(

yeah I think that the brood will be long gone before it comes to extraction time. still not been able to go check on them today cos of the rotten weather here.

    AFB found in Leicestershire

Has there been any update as to if this has spread? Is it still confined to one apiary?

The queen has got into the blinkin' super :(

Shook all the bees in to the brood box in the end. Did it on Saturday morning. and not had a chance to check if it's worked as the weather has been rotten here today. windy and wet. :(

The queen has got into the blinkin' super :(

Thanks everyone. I know of course that I could plug through the super and find the queen. I was just wondering if there was some smart quick way :) I checked my QE chipper, and it was fine. If there were a fault with it then the queen would be moving between the super and brood box but there...

The queen has got into the blinkin' super :(

It's my own fault. Not sure how it happened... I opened the colony (a colony developing from a nuc I made up in the spring) up a week or so ago and all was well. When I went today there were some capped brood in the brood box but no eggs. Then I found just one queen cup. It was all very odd...
