    Problem Filtering Rendered Wax

Thanks for the tip about cooling it slowly. How about if I left the wax in the container next to the stove? It burns slowly all night and takes about 7 hours to be comfortably touch cool in the morning.

    Problem Filtering Rendered Wax

Thanks for the method. I had thought about heating the wax with water, but dismissed it as I assumed that propolis would float like wax... I will try it tomorrow!!!

    Problem Filtering Rendered Wax

I have been rendering my surplus beeswax on our wood burner and pouring the melted wax through a sieve lined with muslin. This is very effective at getting all the larger bits out but when the wax sets, there are tiny particles of proposlis and other debris at the bottom of the block which gets...

    Scientific evidence for honey-based cures

It sounds like my article is going to be more about myths than cures!! I found an interesting article on the chemistry of honey as an antibiotic and that's still the only medicinal aspect of it that seems to be based on fact. It's just for a local mag and I don't think that they want...

    Scientific evidence for honey-based cures

No, no-one is sick Finman. I have been asked to write an article for a local magazine about the medicinal value of honey and it's proving hard to find real facts!!

    Scientific evidence for honey-based cures

Does anyone know of any scientific research (rather than just anecdotal evidence) that confirms or debunks honey as a cure for common ills? In particular I am interested in if there is any evidence at all for the old honey and cider vinegar cures. There are lots of cyber pages out there but...

    Bee up your trousers.

I am always careful to prevent them from going up my leg after watching this happen to someone at a practical session of my beekeeping course. They had their trouser legs hanging over their wellies, thinking that this would stop the bees falling down the welly tops... she soon learned the hard...

Novices - What lessons have you learned in the 2011?

And at the end of the season, make sure that I put my hive records in a safe place rather than just leaving them lying around. Suspected current location of afor mentioned records: Council Paper Recycling Skip :(

Doyour maths properly when calculating how much syrup you will need so that you don't end up with a 5 litre tub full unused at the end. Also, concentrate when making the syrup and don't absent midedly measure the sugar in imperial and the water in metric... :(

What constitutes a "heavy" varroa load?

I was just logging on to comment on the same thing... It's reasonably obvious that I should try and keep the mite levels as low as possible. Maybe I should have phrased the question differently: 1) What "natrual" mite drop level should I expect over a fixed period (e.g. 3 days) for a single...

    When honey isn't honey...

And if memory serves me correctly isn't the enzyme used to invert sugar invertase? Which also happens to be the enzyme bees use to convert nectar in to honey ;)

    When honey isn't honey...

:D But isn't honey without all the natural bits basically just golden syrup???

I think that a lot of associations are quite "mature". Our meetings are the only place now where I ever get addressed as "young man" :)

What constitutes a "heavy" varroa load?

To clarirfy, no, I don't leave the boards in all the time. I put them in briefly for a few days when monitoring natural drop and then again when treating with Apiguard in accordance with the instructions and to compare the drop to the pre-treatment rate over the same quantity of days. I tend to...

Alternatively, the expert is someone that you call in at the last minute to share the blame :D I'm glad it's not just me... :) I think that I'm gonna paint mine hi-viz yellow this winter so I don't keep putting it down and not being able to see where...
