    Polishing Wax Cake

Has anyone got any top tips on how to get the blemishes out of a wax cake to make it lovely and smooth for the show?? There are little bits of pitting around the side. Perhaps my bowl wasn't smooth enough in the first place. Do I need to remelt or can I just polish out with a duster? Thanks

Mead - how to use the cappings

Sorry, Corkbeek, only just looked at the photo, and looking really nice colours. :hurray:

Mead - how to use the cappings

Well last night, under the insistence of my 12 year old, before I really knew what I was doing...but then I suppose experience is the best learning curve, we started on the production of mead. I was excited to see that it was bubbling this morning in the air lock, but I think we filled it too...

Mead - how to use the cappings

The photo of the mead with strawberries and blueberries look great. Let us know what they taste like. I am about to have my first go at mead making, but it'll probably be plain, as I was hoping to enter it at the honey show next year, and they always say only honey, water and yeast. However...

    Metal Candle Mould

It really is quite easy to make candles....you can even use various household pots, etc, such as good yoghurt pots, denture tablet containers, and I quite like the cheap screwball ice cream containers, which are tapered. Pirce the bottom of the pot. You do need the tight sized wick for the...

    Metal Candle Mould

Success. My son drilled out a bigger hole for me, and it is working fine, although the surface of the candle is not very smooth, unlike the silicone moulds I have used previously. I did contact TH.. a couple of days ago, and they said they would ring back, but never did. I expect they are busy...

    Sugar Prices

Thanks Monsieur Abeille....I think I'll look for the Euro Shopper then.

    Sugar Prices

OK. Who brought all the sugar from Asda in Bromsgrove? I made a special journey and had to pay for the carpark! So I've already spent pounds before saving any on the sugar! Does any one know how much the sugar is at Bookers at the mo....might need to head there, and I didn't know you could buy...

    Metal Candle Mould

Not yet. I thought I'd try you lot first, as usually there is someone out there who has had the problem previously, or who can tell me where I am going wrong. I will do that before I start drilling bigger holes!

    Metal Candle Mould

Hi Adam, No, I didn't know there were such things. Is that where I am going wrong....but I don't think a needle big enough to take the wick would go through the hole either. Or is a wicking needle something special?

    Metal Candle Mould

I have got the Number 6 wick from TH..... which is for a 2" candle, so slightly too big, as this candle is 1 and 3/4 " actually. But even the small wick, size 2 for a 1" candle won't go through the hole. So I think I'll have to drill the hole a little larger, but didn't want to do that, as I...

    Metal Candle Mould

I think that I did order the correct wick size, but I will check tomorrow. I made one tonight, by just inserting the end of the wick in the hole, but ideally the bottom end in the mould is usually best and ends up being the top, so it needs a wick standing up. If I don't turn it upside down...

    Metal Candle Mould

Does anyone have a metal candle mould from the the suppliers beginning withTh? I brought a lovely hexagonal mould, but the hole to put the thread through is ever so small. The mould is about 2 inches wide, so I wanted to use quite a thick wick. Just wondering if I need to drill the hole out...

Spring Convention: how important is it to you?

I've not been yet, but do want to one day...proabably just once to see what goes on. I do think it's far too far for lots of people to travel too, and these sort of things ought to be in different venues around the country, as should the National Honey Show, which I am sure I'll never get...

    Over run with earwigs

When I was last extracting, a few earwigs were spun out from the comb. Luckily they stuck to the side and I managed to fish them out with a long knife. Not very nice to have earwigs in the honey! I had had the supers in the house for a couple of days, and I suppose the earwigs had taken refuge...

    another piccy from the garden

It's far too pretty to be a weed, looking close at it. Bees are obviously enjoying it. I've got mallows about, but have never noticed bees on them. I'll be taking a closer look now.

    Hornets catching bees

The hornets were not in the varroa tray, but flying to the entrance area and grabbing a bee. Anyone tried a bottle wasp trap, perhaps with cat food and water in to attract the meat eaters?

    Bees in the wild

I'm keeping an eye on a wild colony in a tree about 1/2 mile from my bees. They are probably a swarm that deserted me after being hived last year. (This year I have hived all swarms with a frame of brood to prevent this) However, there was a colony in a sole tree in the middle of one of our...

    Hornets catching bees

Hi Norton, Do hornets go for strawberry jam if they are after protein? I know they probably don't take many bees, it's just not nice to witness.....probably I shouldn't look! I expect that most are also foragers that are at the end of their life also, unless they select the juicy young bees...
