Volume of soapy water necessary to terminate a colony?

Rather involved story of tree falling, road side cover lost and an ongoing problem of bees following, meeting, and stinging. I will if bees not a threat to others attempt a requeen (my usual solution). However, this new context allows it may be necessary to terminate the unit. I am aware of the...

    Supers Stacks & Rodents

Q: Supers plastic bagged and stacked over winter. Noted some of the plastic bag at sides have been shredded by I suspect rodents but no entry made to boxes/frames. Is it ok to add these supers (wet) to hives? Do they require hosing down?? I note comments recently in an earlier thread re Weil’s...

    What to do now

Moving them within the apery a poor option as will leave flybacks being homeless seeking revenge. Suggest combine with original or preferably established quieter crew. May take some time to quieten. Again, some may flyback… I imagine a unit as aggressive as reported might be difficult to requeen...

Thymol emulsified mix - conrete hard

Thanks for the replies... no big deal but simply unanticipated ... heating did liquify for use and now back in solid state. For what its worth, didnt use lechthin granules but powder. Blackcloud, to thIs point I simply added the Thymol to syrup but the discussion as to equal distribution within...

Thymol emulsified mix - conrete hard

Followed recipe (??)… 30g Thymol crystals with 5 ml Isopropyl Alcohol. 140ml boiling water + 1 Teaspoon Lecithin dissolved and added together to form milky white ‘liquid’ as anticipated. This morning it is wax solid… candle like… didn’t anticipate this ... Have I missed a step??? Or do I chip...

    Wintering Apidea Queens

Have x 2 double Apideas [Q+] seeking winter accommodation. Two options: Have them share a divided BS Nuc where each would have 3 frames each side of a metal or plastic divider? Shared heat but small units. OR Hive one in a Poly Nuc (6f) and one in wooden Nuc (5F). In either case could allow...

    Brood Frame Drawing in September

Oh, I’ve had a Homer Simpson moment ‘Duh!’ … been feeding Nuc’s 1:1 all season to draw comb… the notion of feeding a hive already full of stores threw me but of course, so thanks for jolting me out of the groove. Eric, a very good point. There are 25 strong double units and supers have only...

    Brood Frame Drawing in September

For the first time the apiary has been swamped in Heather Honey (Blast!!!) … The Hives are national double brood. Whereas the supers are now off, the vagabonds have used the top brood boxes as aux supers and filled and capped across the frames to the detriment of laying space. I have...

Nicot cage - how long should Queeny be in there?

Approx 12 hours will normally suffice for Q to fufill duty. A 12 hr old larva for transfer to nursery is noted as good practice in grafting. Older will suffice and bees will select up to 48hr where necessary but Q quality may suffer.

Eggs… No Eggs... Eggs... No Eggs & nothing else.

Thanks Swarm .... Yep they have fresh pollen and nectar; all is as one might otherwise expect save size for obvious reason. But nary a larva. The sealed brood might just do it ... so lets have a shot at it. Thanks again.

Eggs… No Eggs... Eggs... No Eggs & nothing else.

Overwintered Nuc, with queen marching about. Look in and a half frame of eggs, revisit no egg and no other brood stage. Revisit and same routine again. Mystery is that here are approx. 3 frames of bees still within. History: a troublesome swarm cast that was v difficult to Q but did so. Wouldn’t...

Poly nucs bees have eaten holes to the feeder compartments

Wasps tend to burrow at corners of my Maisemore and other poly feeders [coated in maisonery paint]. I put gaffer tape on the outer edges as prevention. reported herein in the past that poly allows micro seepage, hence wasps attracted. A suggestion was to paint the internal syrup container as...

    Workers do move eggs

Found same on a number of occasions. One post swarm. No QC(s) in BB and found one SBC in super over Qx. Now always check and sometimes fruitfully. Many herein allow such egg(s) to be worker eggs missed by the sisterhood. Others, suggest bees may move/ carry an egg to a PC in the BB and or...

Honey in old brood comb not being capped

Enrico, Only this week I was wondering about same. I noted as you have, that supers which had earlier held brood whilst in the main capped; the lower crescent where brood had been, remained uncapped across the super. This was not a one off … I have noted it previously. Usually a small crescent...
