    Inspection tray / Varroa Board

If you can find someone some old election posters (the correx type) they make good inspection trays with very little work.

Question for the Honey Judges please

Looks like a case of ask two judges, get two answers.... The better reasoned of the two responses indicates a preference for the drone comb, the reason being that there will be a greater weight of honey in the drone comb. I do not recollect reading a honey schedule that stipulated drone cell...

Does vinegar in syrup stop mould?

Your bees will take the syrup down pretty quickly so it will not be necessary to add anything to it. I would be inclined to just feed them and use the subsequent free time to source some Thymol to preserve subsequent batches of syrup.

Moving hive one & half miles

That is quite an assumption. Given that beekeepers regularly overwinter 5 and 5 frame National Nucs which are subsequently moved into full hives, a Nuc comprising 3-4 14x12 frames is a fair enough size to overwinter. Small colonies are routinely overwintered with success in much smaller "nucs"...

Black Cornish Native bees of Rame

I recognised the roofs and it would appear I correctly pointed a third party to the correct supplier last night! PS - back on thread - it was nice to see the Cornish AMM getting some good PR.

How can you afford lots of colonies

R.O.B. Manley - "Honey Farming". ISBN 0-907908-45-4 Available as a reprint from Northern Bee Books. Apologies - I "replied" before seeing that others have provided the book title and that a copy has arrived. Enjoy reading and re-reading it.

How can you afford lots of colonies

I lifted the book off my shelves on Tuesday night and its currently sitting on my desk awaiting a wee re-read over lunch with a cup of coffee ... There are some books that are worth going back to as you can learn from them

How can you afford lots of colonies

:iagree: Working with bees is often payment enough for the hobbyist or amateur beekeeper! My comments on "affording" bees: Do not be a bee fiddler. Work smart. Work with your bees, site them well and you will get a surplus of honey. Buy smart: buy in bulk, buy in groups and buy in sales...

How long can it take for a queen to start laying?

It can take quite a while for some queens to come into lay but a long delay may not be ideal and can in some instances be an indication of a possible queen problem. If can also be down to the weather.... Are you seeing sealed worker brood in Supercedure 1 or is it drone brood? Have you had much...

    Off to the Heather

Theres a beekeeper I know of who, due to poor weather, complained about having to feed his bees all Summer a few years back. He too was feeding above supers. I have been advised that he has maintained this practice... Given the number of shops he has product in, his bees must be "producing" at...

    introducing new Queen

Is it just worker brood in the supers or just drone brood? I would advocate making up a nuc with your existing queen - three frames of emerging brood plus adhering bees and a couple more frames of bees shaken in would make a very strong Nuc to overwinter - just be sure to leave a similar amount...

First inspection with a bigger hive - advice welcome

Bernard - my apiaries are probably closer to you than anyone else on the forum - same County.... Be aware that I am seeing a complete brood break in some of my colonies at present as there is precious little for them to be foraging on. They are starting to find some pollen and that is getting...

    Replacing old frames

With regard to the first hive mentioned, you might wish to consider removing a few old, brood frames now and replacing them with frames of foundation(perhaps 3 frames or so). It is likely there will be frames to the outside of your two brood boxes that are currently free of brood and it is these...

    Transporting a hive

I moved two Nucs yesterday to unite them with Q- colonies. Not a complex process or one that should be overthought but I accept that it is daunting the first time you transport bees. Nuc 1, Home apiary. Entrance closed with a piece of foam rubber pressed into the entrance with my hive tool...
