    Smoke irritation - advice welcome

The tar only becomes an issue if you oversmoke the bees. While extracting honey for a neighbouring beekeeper in 2016, I had the opportunity of tasting smoked honey.... He now uses a water mister when checking on his bees. If you find you need smoke when working with your bees, just remember that...

    Clustering -- exactly how?

In the Summer and Autumn, the bees are doing their preparatory work for the Winter - including household re-modelling. They build/demolish/rebuild comb when they have the resources and weather to do so.

Do you try and convince farmers to sow a particular crop?

Any growers I know are planning years ahead in terms of their rotations. The price of fertiliser has gone up a lot over here and it is making them review how they manage their crops. I suspect that beans are going to become more popular as a rotation and you may begin to see some growers...

Out apiary (that’s an out out apiary!)

Currently my furthest out apiary is 12 miles away as the crow flies. That tends to be my first port of call and then I do two more out apiaries on the way home. I am not inclined to travel further as my beekeeping is done on Saturdays and evenings. Travelling eats into bee management time.

    Floors

Google "Stock Board" or "Stokbord" for your recycled plastic sheets. I have encountered it in the same generic thicknesses as plywood and considered using it when making roofs. Yet to find any at the right price (i.e. free) to try out.

    BBKA 2017 Honey survey

Lets face it. Many beekeepers do not want to let on how much honey they "might" be able to produce.... Trying to get anyone to fill in those sort of surveys in any part of ireland is exactly the same. People with one or two colonies, relatively new beekeepers learning the ropes are the ones who...

    Fitting a mouse guard

Either or neither. From a personal perspective, my entrances are shallow enough to serve as mouse guards so I don't add any form of further mechanical block to keep put mice. This work for me. It works for the man who started me in beekeeping and it works for a lot of other beekeepers. There...

    BBKA Bee Breeding certificate.

Once again, I am reminded of Manley's description of the "types" of beekeeper.

    Disability Beekeeping.

:iagree: There is no universal "disability". It is generally better to take the approach that there are some things that some disabled people cannot do and that there are fewer things that they "cannot" do if some sort of reasonable adjustment is put in place to help them. Accessibility is an...

    Cluster of bees around entrance

Your bees are working the ivy at present and there will probably be a fair number of young bees orientating on the hive also. Combined, it is to be expected that there will be a bit of a cluster around the entrance. There are still wasps around so it is entirely possible that the cluster of bees...

Naughty - but entertaining!! Now to find a copy....

    Persistant angry guards

I took a tour around some of my out apiaries on Saturday and observed an odd wasp still "investigating" around beehives. If wasps are still trying to rob stores, some bees might be a touch defensive as a result.

Worker or drone foundation in the supers?

I'll disagree with one element of Finmans reply. From my experience, bees are happy to fill drone cells with honey. The rest of his reply I agree with.

    For those interested in AMM

:nono::offtopic: Quis Custodiet, you, or rather your online persona, represent the sole entity I have encountered spreading these malignant tales. Why is this? Beyond your posts, I am yet to find any evidence of such behaviour attributed to beekeepers on the island of Ireland. Fake news? You...

    For those interested in AMM

Just to keep things "on thread" , it is nice to see that jack is finally in a position to issue press releases about his research findings. I look forward to reading his published research report in the near future.

    Reading material??

Jurgen is one of the speakers at he INIB conference on 21st October. Mark Winston ("The Biology of the Honey Bee" and his "new" book "Bee Time: Lessons from the Hive") is the other main speaker and I have to say his books are a good read. I'll second earlier coments about the Digges books.

    Insurance

I have only been able to track down old cases, most of which involve bees, horses and calamity. I think some of them have been highlighted on the forum previously and are drawn from a variety of common law jurisdictions.

    Asian Hornet in Devon

Apologies for posting this across two threads. Has anyone any update on the Bee Craft bulletin circulated earlier today which confirms the identification of AH in Plymouth?
