    Where to start

Get chatting to your local fire service. If they are willing to help, you may (along with them) be able to use their thermal image camera. May help show up some warmer spots depending on the wall types and thicknesses. Just an idea.

Angry farmer wants me to move hive

Ask him to move his stable a short way and you will move your hive the same distance in the opposite way. I don't see how he can demand it. I would suggest that a letter to him stating that, but in the interest of neighbourly harmony, you will see what you can do. Was going to suggest a screen...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Inspected my 1st hive of bees for the second time today. Only had them 1 week. Found the queen!!! And managed to spend the time looking and finding all the small eggs. Thought all week that I had bought a queenless hive, but I admit I was worrying unnecessarily. Super is filling up and I now...

Best preservative dressing for smoker bellows

This may sound silly, but ask an old bagpiper. They used to use animal product bags on their bagpipes, more recently switching to man made bags. I remember my dad pouring all sorts of things to preserve and maintain air tightness, including egg yolks etc. I will ask him what he used to chuck in...

How do I collect a swarm without going up a ladder?

I'm a fireman and live on ladders when at work (not literally - before the comments come back), but as the others have said, not worth risking your neck for. Got to look after yourself before you can look after your bees. ;) Dave.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

My 1st hive, 1st inspection Opened up my new hive and had a good look through. Smoker kept going out and as a fireman, I think I need more practice at keeping it going!! Couldn't find the queen, but did not want to dwell on this as I had the hive open a lot longer than I originally wanted to...

    finding a new home

Farms seem to be the obvious choice - lots of plants, open land for the bees, increased crops for the farmers etc. My search took me to 2 farms, where they both agreed that I could keep bees there. Unfortunately by the time I pulled my finger out, some 2 years later, I would have needed to go...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Saw my first swarm on the day that I bought my first hive and bees. Set them up in their new location last night. I'm a beekeeper! :) Have to take the wife shopping today. :( Dave.

    Swarm distances

I was driving home from a nearby shopping location and drove straight through a flying swarm of bees! Typical! The day I am buying my first hive and bees together, I see a swarm right in front of me. I stopped and had a look, and are definately honey bees from what I could see. The annoying...

    Watch out, Badger's about!

No fence has been discussed so far. I am trying to keep things as simple as possible, but will probably carry on with the location due to the benefits that it presents over my other site. At my local assoc meeting recently, we were shown a feeder board that had been left out , to allow some bees...

    Watch out, Badger's about!

I am just about to site my first hive. I have two possible locations to place it in. My main location is a small field which is owned by a local business man. In talking with his wife this afternoon, she tells me that they have a fox in or around the area that has recently taken some of their...

    Keeping bees for profit...

My take on the subject is as follows: If you are looking to make money then you need to have a business plan on how to do this, weigh up the costs of your time, effort and equipment. Work to strict timetables, have the reserve money there to ensure business continuity in difficult times. Many...

Fridge as warming cabinet = help with Freon

Can I suggest that this is taken as the joke I believe it was meant. The fire Brigade have to deal with so many of these leaking fridges and if you have one, that isn't leaking, then there is no reason why it would now start leaking or would if used as a warming cabinet. Just leave everything...

    Allotment Beekeeping

I fully agree with your comments. The initial thoughts on greater productivity for all - a win win situation - soon became a case of people stating that they were alergic to bees, and any other excuse that would stop me from persuing the idea. And as per your comments, I decided soon after...

    Allotment Beekeeping

A discussion thread. I was told a couple of years ago that there is a piece of legislation / policy that means that allotment associations have to look favourably on beekeepers wanting to keep bees either on their allotment or on some suitable ground within the allotment field. I have no more...

    Drowning Queen

Ron Browns Beekeeping - A seasonal Guide Page 106 The water method (Snelgrove) I won't repeat the text, for copyright reasons but yes, it states that a wet and hungry queen will be accepted under almost any circumstances. The term "drowning" is probably a bit strong - it maybe should read...

Do all Bee Keeping Suppliers give rubbish service?

Having sold on ebay, the buyer claimed not to have received an expensive item. The resultant hold on my Paypal account was an inconvenience. After lots of emails and frustration, Paypal ruled in favour of the buyer because I had not sent by tracked method, as per the paypal guarantee (which they...
